Kellen Moore attends his first Pelicans game

I didn't think about Gayle gifting him and his family tickets as a welcoming present. That makes more sense.
That was a valuable PR appearance for sure. For one thing it gives the impression that he is interested in what's going on around the city. And the Pels-clad family members was a nice touch as well. But also Gayle and her front office was able to get a feel for the acceptance of their decision by the response from the local sports fans when he was announced during the game break.

Let's face it, the team will generally parade the top acquisitions around the fandom to quickly make them feel part of the city and to see what the fans think of the team's personnel decisions. It's a great idea that happens with every franchise around the country. Getting the fans emotionally involved is Job One with any sports organization.
