I've been thinking some more about Moore's answer to being asked if Carr was the starter. I started thinking "if" and "why not" regarding Moore's answer. This is just scenario brainstorming and I'm sure there are plausible possibilities that I haven't considered
The first thing that popped up was what if Moore has decided Haener or Rattler is the starter, then why wouldn't he say that? They are both under contract and neither one of them would likely balk at being told they're the starter. So if either of them are Moore's choice, why wouldn't he say so?
They would know they have to move on from Carr, because he's not going to stick around as a backup and he's not going to waive his no trade clause. If they've decided that the starter will be Haener or Ratter, I think they would have let Carr know straight away, because Loomis has a history of being upfront with players like that.
The only possibility I came up with is that he did his research on the local media and decided he wanted to start off his relationship with the media by letting them know he's not going to confirm or deny anything to the media before the team's process is complete and the team is ready to make an announcement. He gave an almost identical verbatim answer both times he was asked. He had prepared an answer and he stuck to it.
The next question that popped up is if he hasn't made a decision, why wouldn't he say that? Triplet asked him if he thought it was still a decision to be made. If the decision hasn't been made, why wouldn't he say that?
Maybe he wanted to set the relationship with the press that he won't discuss anything at all until the process is complete. I can't think of any other reason he wouldn't let everyone know a decision hasn't been made if that's the case.
If he's decided on Carr, why wouldn't he say so? One reason that seems plausible is they haven't reached an agreement with Carr on reworking his contract. If he announces it and then the deal falls through and they have to move on from Carr, then their backup plan at QB knows that he was the backup plan. No reason to have that hanging over anyone. Again, another plausible reason is he wanted to set the relationship with the media.
What if he's targeting a QB that's not on the team, why wouldn't he say so? This one makes a lot of sense to me. Why let Carr, Haener and Rattler know that you want someone else before you actually get deal done with them? If you don't get the deal done, then all those guys know they weren't the first choice. That's an unnecessary thing to have hanging over everyone. And for those quick to say, they don't have the cap to sign another QB, have you not learned anything about saying Loomis doesn't have the cap space to sign someone they want to sign? Again, there's also the plausible explanation of setting the relationship with the local news.
By not giving any kind of definitive answer, he's got the press and fans talking about it a lot more than if he had given a definitive answer. Maybe that's why he chose not to confirm or deny anything other than he thinks Carr is a premiere QB and he looks forward to going through the process with him and the other players. He sure has gotten everyone's attention.
