Saints will interview Vikings DBs coach Daronte Jones for Defensive Coordinator [on February 15]

Schemes are built back to front these days, defenses want to limit explosive pass plays first and fit the run second. It’s one reason teams love nickel, they would rather a 7th guy in coverage versus a 5th guy on the LOS.

I would agree with picking a DC with a DB background to make sure we are designing and teaching sound coverage schemes. Stopping the run will come down to getting better talent on the field, if we have to commit extra resources to the run then we’re just asking to get crushed by the big play.
I agree, in that article they point out that the Chargers defense was excellent in getting teams to 3rd and long. I’ve read other articles that proved he can shut down a teams run game w/ best of them.

A 66% conversion rate on 3rd downs in passing league is damning. So it’s either his secondary coach was trash or he couldn’t mesh the concepts well enough. Since he was HC and in charge of building that D how he wanted it, I’m leaning towards the issue being him.

I’d love to be wrong but it’s proof why most DCs are former secondary coaches in some capacity and we know Staley is a LB coach by trade
