Schaudenfraude From Recent Super Bowl

I haven't enjoyed a Super Bowl this much since our own in the 2009 season. Mainly because, I was so sick and tired of the Chiefs getting ALL of the calls in high leverage moments, and all of the breaks. They reminded me of the 80's 49ers who were good enough on their own that they didn't need help from the officials but got it anyway. Remember when they were playing us and Jerry Rice spiked the ball at the 3-5 yard line, ran into the endzone with this hands up like he'd scored a TD, the ref looked at the ball exactly where he spiked it, looked at Rice and raised his hands as if it was a TD anyway? And since there was no instant replay, the call stood.

That's what it was like watching the Chiefs for 3 years. In many ways, they are the anti-Saints or Bizzaro Saints. Every time they had a 3rd or 4th down that was stopped, there'd magically be a DPI or defensive holding call extending the drive where they would invariably score (ESPECIALLY LATE IN THE GAME), and conversely, every time their opponent got a huge offensive gain, there'd miraculously be an offensive holding or offensive pass interference call. And add to that, that the Chiefs almost NEVER got called for offensive holding, it was frustrating.

And listening to the pundits STILL give Jalen Hurts back-handed compliments, while all he does is win and win while playing well. I have enjoyed it. The absolute obliteration was thoroughly enjoyable. I only wished they didn't allow the garbage-time stats making it look like Mahomes actually played a semi-decent game.

I know that I can't be the only one.
Ahhhh, yes. Some of us of a certain age also remember the 1989 home game vs. the 49ers. Rice lost control of the ball in the process of trying to spike it early, which was a bit out of character for him. And indeed, there WAS instant replay in 1989 (it began in the NFL in 1986), but back then there were no automatic replays of certain specific situations like today. As I remember it, it had to be initiated by the one instant replay official up in the booth. The 24-20 loss was part of a four-game losing skid early that season after winning the opener that featured all the things typical of the Mora era, mainly blown leads and bad luck in general.

Back to the present -- indeed it was good to have someone else win the Super Bowl this time. I'd grown tired of the Chiefs the same way many grew tired of watching Walsh's 49ers, Jimmy's Cowgirls, Belichick/Brady's Patriots....always a favorable call at the most curious times. Can we now include Hurts now in the conversation as to who's an elite, top-tier QB in this current era? Only other QB to get the best of the Chiefs since 2019 was Burrow, also an elite. (yes, they lost the pandemic Super Bowl to Brady, but that entire season deserves an asterisk anyway).
