Schadenfreude is the joy of harming others. For example, if someone acts cocky and then has a mishap and you can't help but smile. So you think to yourself: "He deserved it, the right person was affected"... that is the definition of schadenfreude.
It doesn't have to be personal harm. It also includes a sense of joy from someone's misfortune. The Falcons collapsing in a Superbowl or the Chiefs finally not getting bailed out by the referees, isn't something that harmed either team as much as their luck running out. Schadenfreude is applicable here despite no one being actually harmed by the events taking place.
