I would argue they were more gullible and greedy than dumb in that they decided to invest heavily into an upstart, Silicon Valley biomedical company whose main purported invention seemed to have a lot of potential without doing some diligent, proper investigation with their stock/bond managers or investment gurus to.see if this idea truly had advanced to the point where it might be possible for mass mainstream use.

Let's also be honest: I've heard very few tech engineers, scientists or programmers since Holmes' conviction say that her overall idea doesn't have promise or merit or that someone else one day won't finish what she started with a similar-type invention but this time, the math and overall algorithms are there to support if. No one's ever said her ideas behind Theranos aren't possible, its just the time and science behind it werent palpable, she privately knew this and tried to play the long game until science did match up and it failed.
