Sportskeeda’s Tony Pauline: “I’m told Saints are considering releasing Tyrann Mathieu” [Tyrann: “Slow news day....I am New Orleans!”]

The team will not look like it did last year. We should prepare for that. I've said it multiple times already. We should prepare for changes that aren't based on current opinions about player performance or the last regimes tendencies for playing time. We will likely see average players traded out for average players in what looks like head scratcher moves. The new staff will know what they want and Loomis will try to accommodate. Some of these moves will not be salary cap friendly so it could be possible Mathieu is moved. However...

From the salary cap perspective, it doesn't make sense right now, but it could after the draft. If he's not in the plans, there's no real rush to make this move especially with the salary cap ramifications. Who knows though.

I also know that many threw dirt on Kamara's career after the 2023 season and I spent last off season preaching that Saints shouldn't judge Kamara based on being stuck in Carmichael's horrid offense with no offensive line help. Now, it's Mathieu. And I'm not defending Mathieu's level of effort because you can tell he wasn't fully committed to the strategy. A strategy that put an extraordinary amount of pressure on the secondary. A strategy built by round hole, square peg Dennis Allen who we all agree was a horrible head coach. He didn't do any of the players a favor last year to include the defense. I could definitely see Mathieu's being frustrated with a strategy he no longer had faith in. It's unprofessional but passion has always been a part of his game. Will the new staff take that into consideration? Or do they have an idea of who they want playing that position already? We'll see, but I can see it going either way.
