I mean he kinda did though. After it was all said and done he did what he said, destroyed the stones, super unselfish move of him. He could have used them for anything, to stay the most powerful being, but he sacrificed his power to keep peace even at the risk of destroying himself. Then he went and rested in his garden, know they would come to kill him.
He ran and hid where he thought no one would find him.

That's not sacrificing. He didn't fight back, because he knew he couldn't win.

He didn't restore peace. He murdered half of the sentient beings in the universe and yet there was still all the problems there were before.

You can't kill your way to a better world. It has been tried for thousands of years and it has never worked. It has always created as much or more "bad" than any "good" that has come from it.
