Carr had no reason to take a pay cut with the escalating salaries of QBs. Carr's not the future, but he's the present while we work on the future. I'm cool with that.
I don't disagree. I think the Geno Smith trade and word that he was going to get a $40 to $45 million deal ended any chance of Carr taking a cut. Before that, at least you could say that Geno Smith, who is a good comp far Carr is only getting $25 million so if we cut you that is what you will get. But once Smith was traded and the price of his next contract was set, all that was over and the Saints lost what very little leverage they had.
As far as Carr, I'd have rathered go with Fields, Rattler, or a rookie to try to find The Guy, but I don't think going with Carr is a bad thing. It's a decision to try to be competitive this year which I'm fine with especially for a first year HC. My preference would be to start the search for a young QB this year and eat the cap hit this year, but I don't have a huge issue with keeping Carr for a year.
That might change if Loomis goes nuts in free agency and starts going all in with restructures for other players. But, I really don't think that is going to happen. I think he will sign 2 or 3 mid-level guys to fill holes and then some low priced guys, but nothing crazy.
