Patriots trade DT Davon Godchaux to the Saints for 2026 7th round pick

I love it. I've been tough on the front office the past few years but moves like this are Loomis at his best. Address major needs with trades and free agency so you can go into the draft with the ability to go BPA. You don't want have a lot of unknowns heading into the draft especially with a new scheme. Godchaux has been starting in the NFL for the past 8 years so you trade him for almost nothing and you head into next year knowing that at a bare minimum you have a starting caliber player.

It will be fun to watch the pieces come together in the front 7. I haven't been this excited about a scheme change since Gregg Williams and replaced Gary Gibbs and his bend and then break defense. Looking forward to a more exotic, versatile defense. Just give me as much speed as possible on the field. I'd love to see some youth as well. If you look at the depth chart on D you'll see that even in their prime these older guys were never exactly fleet of foot.

Yeah, there was this thought floating around that the team will be focusing on the salary cap and managing the current roster of talent within it. Perhaps driven by the minimal amount of changes we saw with the last coaching change people aren't expecting the Saints to be active, but that was a special case. Dennis Allen was essentially a continuation of the previous regime. Since he helped create that roster, you could expect him not to change it very much (except for the soul crushing DB cuts or trades right before the seasons started, he loved that for some reason).

Not to toot my own horn, but I've said it a few times now, we should expect to see these type of changes throughout free agency. Again, if I had to guess, this is just the beginning of an active, though perhaps not blockbuster, free agency period for the Saints. The team isn't going to look like it did last year. They're not waiting to reshape the roster after winning some salary cap olympics. They're making moves aimed at getting players better players not salary cap space.
