I'd Feel Better about the Saints if...

I get that the coaching wasn't optimal, but DA was considered to be a top defensive coach not long ago. It was his lack of abilities as a HC that got him fired. So I'm not expecting Staley to be an upgrade with largely the same roster and a change in scheme that doesn't fit that roster very well. And it's more complicated than what players I wanted to add. It's the overall roster and cap management that I have a problem with. I certainly didn't want to kick a bunch of contracts forward into future years for players that should be depth at best.
He used to be but the cracks in the run defense started to show in 2023 and it was done for in 2024. Mobile QB's would eat his lunch. I think he's headed in the wrong direction.

Staley's defense is pretty versatile so it'd be inaccurate to say the roster doesn't fit his defense. It might fit Taylor and McKinstry better. Foskey has a chance. In our base defense Davis won't have to be as sideline to sideline so it might help him. Our DE's can drop weight and become more explosive. NT was really the biggest concern.

There's only so much that can be done in one off-season. With the contracts already on the books some of the only moves we had were to kick the contracts forward into years where we have more cap room. And the contracts themselves are relatively cheap. It's just not realistic to blow up the roster. I see a clear path forward. That being said if they bungle the draft then my tone will quickly change.
