I promise if I see that mentioned one more time, I gonna freaking flip my goose. Do some fans not understand that “going in cold” is one of the key aspects in being a QB2?! That players’ very existence is to be ready to “go in cold”. It blows my mind that is what so many are falling back on to excuse Jameis’s part in the loss.

Please don’t misunderstand me. Jameis is not primarily at fault. He does, however, carry SOME blame. Had it been Haener, who’s a rookie both in the league and in our system, I’d extend far more grace about his play. But Jaboo is an eight year vet with at least three years in our system. Heck, he actually should be more comfortable with the plays than Carr. Him “going in cold” is a wild take to me. Jameis had nearly the same amount of time as Carr to get some points on the board. Even though a pro kicker should make 40+ kicks routinely, a 45yd FG isn’t the greatest distance to put on a rookie’s shoulders w/the game on the line. Honestly, it shouldn’t have come in the waning minutes of the game. It’s ridiculous that was the closest we’d gotten to scoring since the first half. Saying Jameis has no fault in this loss makes no sense. He’s the QB. He touched the ball more than anyone and had the power to audible out of playcalls. If we’d won, he’d have gotten a good bit if not most of the glory. Given that, he doesn’t get to escape part of the blame—even if it’s not a large amount.

The entire team needs to be light years better. As the now QB1, Jameis has to instill confidence in his teammates. Sadly, I don’t think they all believe in him. DD’s interview definitely hinted to that. The team seemed shell shocked when Carr went down and they never recovered. They can’t remain numb. Jameis has to play better, and they have to help him. Trust that his teammates aren’t buying the “cold” excuses. He had one job as they all do. If Winston is ever to be a QB1 for another franchise again, he better master staying ready and hot when his number is called.

Agree completely with the OP but I think it’s time to move on from yesterday and look ahead to Tampa.
On the plus side, we’re 2-1, defense is still elite, Kamara is now back and Carr isn’t going to miss too much time by the looks of things.

It now falls on Carmichael to devise a game plan that accounts for Winston’s weaknesses and the one glaring problem on this team - the O-Line. Quick, short passes to Thomas and Olave, screens with AK, avoiding 3rd and long, regular use of Hill and getting the ball in Shaheed’s hands behind the LOS is the basic route to at least us giving us a shot. If we can get through this next month 2-2 at least, I’d consider that a success and put us in a strong position to make the playoffs.

Jameis didn't even need to get us some points.

If could have at least led us to two or three first downs on each second-half possessions, it would have:
a. Eaten up much more of the clock and probably not have let them enough time to score 17 points.
b. Given our defense a rest. They didn't go into "suck mode" in the 2nd half for no reason.

So, I'll be a Jameis apologist....
I'm sorry You played like crap.

I don't like Winston as a QB, love the person and teammate, but definitely don't care for him as a QB.

But come on. The dude did NOT lose the game for us. He came in off the bench behind arguably the WORST offensive line in the NFL, trying to execute vanilla play calling that was obvious to the other coaching staff, with absolutely no running game. I am not making excuses for him, but he's a very average QB that came into play for a bad offense. I am not sure what we thought would happen. Our starter only managed 10 points to that point.

We still had a shot to go ahead late but missed a relatively easy FG.

Winston did what he was asked to do. The line is the problem. We can’t run the ball or protect the QB.
QB2 are asked to keep the game flow going. While we don’t expect them to win you games, you do expect them to help keep a lead when one is in hand. Yes. The land sucks. It sucked for every QB who’s taken a snap this season under it. I have a hard time overlooking the fact that we couldn’t sustain a few drives just enough to eat the clock even if we didn’t score.

We were actually running the ball decently before Carr went out. After that, it seemed like we totally abandoned the run. Something has to give. Losing a 17 point lead in one quarter is the type of loss every side of the ball and all players had a hand in. That includes Jameis as well. We have to get the line together & our players all need to do their individual jobs better.

Where did I say HE alone lost the game for us? My entire point is that he wasn’t primarily to blame, but folk acting like he has no blame to carry is a reach. I expected a vet to do vet things and at least move the chains.

I’m not sure fans understand what a QB2’s purpose is. Their existence is to go in at a moment’s notice and be ready. Jameis has likely had more experience behind most the players on that Oline than Carr has. I expected more than five punts and I don’t think that’s unreasonable.

Yea I do not know why we went away from it. We were not running it good but it was better than the first two games. The 10 carries before Carr went out we ran for 4, 1, 19, 10, 6, 1, 2, 0, 0, 6 and those aren't in order.

I am pretty sure I as well as most understand exactly what the QB2 role is. There isn't much we will discuss about the game that a lot of us will not understand. I did not mean to insinuate that you were blaming Jameis or singling him out, my response was more geared towards what I have read on the board. He of course shoulders some blame, even though it is probably lower than almost any player or staff member that were in the stadium on this particular day.

I'd also like to add that.... The LITERAL job description for a backup QB is.... Come into the game cold with no notice and keep us from losing... That is THE JOB. If you don't do it.... Especially with a double digit lead.... It's a failure (by definition) to do your job.

You're right he should not have turned the ball over. :applaud:
