I promise if I see that mentioned one more time, I gonna freaking flip my goose. Do some fans not understand that “going in cold” is one of the key aspects in being a QB2?! That players’ very existence is to be ready to “go in cold”. It blows my mind that is what so many are falling back on to excuse Jameis’s part in the loss.
Please don’t misunderstand me. Jameis is not primarily at fault. He does, however, carry SOME blame. Had it been Haener, who’s a rookie both in the league and in our system, I’d extend far more grace about his play. But Jaboo is an eight year vet with at least three years in our system. Heck, he actually should be more comfortable with the plays than Carr. Him “going in cold” is a wild take to me. Jameis had nearly the same amount of time as Carr to get some points on the board. Even though a pro kicker should make 40+ kicks routinely, a 45yd FG isn’t the greatest distance to put on a rookie’s shoulders w/the game on the line. Honestly, it shouldn’t have come in the waning minutes of the game. It’s ridiculous that was the closest we’d gotten to scoring since the first half. Saying Jameis has no fault in this loss makes no sense. He’s the QB. He touched the ball more than anyone and had the power to audible out of playcalls. If we’d won, he’d have gotten a good bit if not most of the glory. Given that, he doesn’t get to escape part of the blame—even if it’s not a large amount.
The entire team needs to be light years better. As the now QB1, Jameis has to instill confidence in his teammates. Sadly, I don’t think they all believe in him. DD’s interview definitely hinted to that. The team seemed shell shocked when Carr went down and they never recovered. They can’t remain numb. Jameis has to play better, and they have to help him. Trust that his teammates aren’t buying the “cold” excuses. He had one job as they all do. If Winston is ever to be a QB1 for another franchise again, he better master staying ready and hot when his number is called.
