I waited to post anything until after I felt that enough time had passed and enough people have had the chance to swallow the loss and regain conscience. The expectations we have of this team are justified based on their performance over the last season and a half. But I don't think we have the same patience we use to. I do get it however. We have a QB that has done more for the the city than any other player I could imagine. Him being in the last quarter of his career can definitely create a sense of urgency from the fans to win while we still got him.
The 10 game win streak gave us a false sense of reality, when the reality is that even great teams stumble. Last season saw us stumble one game short of a NFCCG. A game in which the team we knew we were showed up in the second half and nearly pulled off an epic comeback.
I have yet to even watch the replay of that game even today. Honestly, I forgot what it felt like to be disappointed in the teams performance. This cowboys game assured that I would never again underestimate the truth that any given opponent can beat you on any given Sunday, Monday, or Thursday. I say this because the feeling I've had this week up until yesterday was that of defeat. I was as upset as I would be if the team had loss a game to get over 500. I remember when we were a struggling team that had to fight constantly to get to and over 500. What I forgot in this win streak was that the expectations we had of this team to this point had already been greatly exceeded. IIRC, in the preseason I predicted us to be 8-4 at this point.
This team has not only achieved, but overachieved. We are in a position to lock up the division with 4 games left. I fully expected this south division to come down to week 15 or 16, yet we are one panthers loss away from back to back south titles. In the aftermath of this latest loss, I forgot to just be proud of what we have been able to accomplish with a soon to be 40 year old QB and a system that doesn't need established superstars at the skill positions to be competitive and successful. This is the best Saints team I've ever witnessed. It would be a shame to see a team stacked like this not win the big one. But it would also be stupid to think that a Thursday night loss on the road means the end to us being a championship team.
Yeah, home field advantage throughout is now a toss up, but it sure feels good to know that we will be in the Playoffs as one of the 12 best teams in the league. This post is a reminder that we have accomplished so much this season despite haters like MJD hoping on our downfall. The motto this season is "prove them right". I believe that message wasn't about the few media members and analyst who have shown support.
I believe it was about a fanbase that loves this team regardless of record. A fanbase that will wait to greet you at the Airport just to show thanks for representing the city the right way. That motto is about our expectations and beliefs. Its a great motto that conveys a standard of greatness instead of hopefulness. I don't hope they bounce back, I expect them to bounce back in a great way. To all the posters who were overly disappointed in the team last Thursday, I remind you, we are two games ahead of the closest team behind us and one Rams loss away from running the conference. Lets regain the energy we had during the last steak and send positive vibes to our boys as they go for another 7 game win steak. WhoDat!
