For those unaware, we've been running a 31 team mock draft on the SSF, located here
The SR.com 2008 7-round Mock Draft {***now drafting***} - SaintsReport Community Forums

We've decided to leave the New Orleans Saints selection up to the SSF at large.

The Saints have already selected
CB Leodis McKelvin
DT Trevor Laws
OLB/DE Shawn Crable
TE Kellen Davis
Select the player you think the Saints should select at #178 overall. I've included most plausible options at #178 at most positions.

poll coming

I chose the kicker. The sixth round is fine for the top rated kicker. He has a big leg, can hit the 50+ yard FGs and can kick off. I'd rather not go into the season with Grammatica or Mare (if re-signed).

Hester will almost undoubtedly win this poll.

My top 3 were Bowman, Moffit (operating under the premise that Crable would be a DE for us), and Arrington. I went with Bowman because I like his upside. I figured we had depth at the Mike spot locked down with Vilma/Simoneau/Shanle. I like Arrington, but I thought it wouldn't hurt to have more talent in the secondary.

Green-Ellis would eat Hester for breakfast...

I voted Paul Smith. 3 year starter under some quality offensive coaches. Accurate, pocket presence, high Attempt/INT ratio, has the reputation of a "field general", etc.

The knocks on him are his height (6-1) and playing out of the shotgun. Hey we've heard that said about a QB before right? ;)

Anyways, I'm not a Palko fan and Burnell isn't anymore of a solution then Martin was 2 years ago.

Payton seems to be high on Palko, IMO we won't draft a qb. I think we would go WR, RB, O-line, or kicker here.

I like Cody Wallace here...I' have him rated as the 4th best C in the draft.

Ikegwuono is a freakin steal here in the 6th round.

What makes you say that?

Well, one thing would be from the Chat with Jimmy Smith he said -

timespicayune - JIMMY SMITH: Nice to see the Matt Flynn fan club check in, Greg. Sorry to burst your bubble, but I don’t see the Saints drafting another young quarterback. Sean Payton seems pleased with Tyler Palko’s up-side, so they’ll stick with him. Flynn might get a shot with some team as a free-agent, the same way Palko did last year with the Saints.

I've also heard other things just don't remember where from.

Ikegwuono is a freakin steal here in the 6th round.

I agree. It's pretty much a low risk/high reward pick at #6. He has injury concerns and possible character issues, but for the 6th round, there's value there.

What makes you say that?

The fact that Palko stuck around over Jason Fife, stopped getting sent to the practice squad late last year, and they just signed a left handed vet backup/mentor who is the very personification of the highest hopes anybody could have for Palko. And Jimmy Smith from the TP is getting the same vibe re: Palko sticking around for a while (meaning the rest of 08 minimum, I'm sure.)

Which isn't to say that there won't be another QB brought in for camp and/or practice squad. And who can ever know who beats who out at Milsaps? But I think "Payton is high on Palko" has been reasonably established.

Jack Ikegwuonu. His upside is so high if he comes back from his injuries that the 6th round is definitely a safe spot to take the risk on. Even if he has a Meachem rookie season on the practice squad, if we can get him healthy he's easily a 1st-day talent. Worth a 6th rounder.
