Easy choice for me out of these two. Not that its a homer pick, but the more likely person for the Saints to bring into the locker room is Hester. Hard worker, great leader. Ikegwuonu has injury concerns - major injury concerns - and character issues. The days of drafting a Chase Lyman with a bum knee are over and this team puts a lot of stock in character. So the choice here is the football player, Jacob Hester.

I voted Hester. The dangers of an armed mob sprouting up if we ever cut Hester aside, if we're concerned about Deuce someone like Hester is the best value/solution (in my mind). I'm fairly optimistic about Pierre Thomas and Reggie Bush, which means the main value you'd be looking for here is a bigger, tougher inside/3rd and short/redzone runner. Which can be had in the lower rounds with someone like, yes, Hester. That he doesn't fumble makes it better.

Plus Hester is the sort of guy that plays on all of the special teams units with a high degree of energy, so from a "snaps" count, he's probably going to get more of them, even if mostly on special teams, then most other players you could pick here.

IMO, I don't think Hester could beat who we already have at the RB position. There are other RBs that could compete, but they are already off the board. I honestly don't know Jack Whateverhislastnameis, but considering the age, injuries, and lack of production from our present group, it couldn't hurt to bring in another CB. That's a lot of CBs, but I'm not sure we know who's gonna make it and who's gonna ride the pine or get cut.

Hester could potentially replace Stecker if Deuce does come back healthy.

i don't know though. A lot can change on the 15th once we decide what we are doing with Deuce.

Hester showed me a lot last season. I don't know how well he'll transition, but when LSU needed 4 yards for a first, he shut up, lowered his head and got 4.1. Just seemed to have it together.

And I didn't go to LSU.

Out of these two, I pick Hester. I do not think J.I. will be on most draft boards, especially not the Saints.

With Deuce, Reggie, PT, Stecker, and KArney...Hester will compete, and be kept around til the final cuts after preseason. We will then offer him a option to be on our PS, but will be signed by the falclowns and given a roster spot.

LOL. So true.

I voted Hester because I think both would have a high probability of being cut if they stick to their appointed position and I think Hester offers the most flexibility. I think he could do very well on special teams, as a FB, RB and probably stick best as a converted TE.

We NEED a playmaker at that position and I think he has the smarts and heart to make that swtich.

(And besides Ikegwuonu has character issues that I don't see a reason to take a chance on if all things are equal.)


PS: No I am not an LSU homer. I have been against this pick, but have no real choice now.

I'm not a homer by any stretch, and I like what Hester brings. I believe he will make someone a great ST, receiving, and short yardage specialist in the NFL for years to come... and cheap, too!

Problem is, how do you squeeze him on to the roster?

*Do you replace a RB, and which one?
*Do you replace the FB?
*Do you start carrying an extra RB or FB?
*Do you replace a ST specialist at backup safety or LB to make room?

Stecker just resigned. So he's not gone, unless you are implying he will be cut.

I don't particularly care for either as a choice for the Saints.
Ikegwuonu is a Tampa 2 type corner, not a man corner. Injury and character concerns aside, he is a good player, but he simply never had the speed to play man coverage. If he overcomes his injury and and immaturity, he'll probably be a fine zone CB for somebody, but he'll never be a man covergae corner.
Hester is a good football player, but unless he's going to play TE, I don't see a spot in the offense for him. We have a fullback, we have a split-back hybrid. What's he going to do?

Hester gets my vote because of the two, he at least has a chance to contribute eventually and will be a contributor on special teams at least, though that is somewhat a waste of his talents. Unless we change our defensive scheme to a Tampa 2, there is no place for Ikegwuono to play for the Saints IMHO.

He could make the team and we not cut any runningbacks. Give him Ronnie Ghent's roster spot. All we need to do is retain him for THIS year and he will have an ACTUAL spot to fill next season. Either Deuce or Stecker will be gone next year so he can have their spot.
