After making the playoffs in 16 of the previous 18 years, the 49ers crashed down in 1999, finishing at 4-12. Their 2000 season showed little improvement.

Out of 35 matchups since 1981, the Saints beat the 49ers in only nine of them. 2000 signaled a turning point in that rivalry, as the Saints swept the 49ers for the first time since 1979 (not counting the strike-shortened 1982 season).

From Nov. 5, 2000, the Saints (6-3) play host to the 49ers (2-7).
