2005 Re-Draft - ESPN (1 Viewer)

The funny thing is that I recall discussion that the Saints were trying to trade from the 2nd rounder up to the late 1st to get a shot at Castillo then.

I still say J. Brown was a good pick. He has his lapses at times, but for the most part, he's a rock solid LT over there. I like how he seems to be a total A Hole in the trenches as well. Nasty OTs that can pass block and run block equally well are hard to find outside of the Top 10. I still see Derrick Johnson's name there and actually Kerry Rhodes was also there, but Jammall Brown was the BPA.

Derrick Johnson at 22?!?! BEHIND PAC MAN?!?! Horrible. Ronnie Brown>>>>>>>>>>Gore.

i like gore more as well. im happy with j. brown. In addition, as much as we need defense, if all of the guys we want are off the board, payton wont hurt my feelings if we draft clady, otah, etc...
maybe we can move jamaal over to the right side to plow some running holes for our guys.

Ronnie Brown>>>>>>>>>>Gore.

OK, I have disagreed with a lot of things you have said, but this one is easy to disagree with.

Huh? What are you talking about?

Hey, man, I can totally see why you'd disagree and the numbers do tell a lot, but not the whole story. Gore's season 2 years ago was a fluke. He snuck up on the league; nobody was expecting him. 2nd year no-name guy, 3rd round draft pick. Added to that, he was running behind a pretty good interior line, with Larry Allen, Eric Heitmann and David Baas; those guys are good... really good. Larry Allen... well, come on. After he shook up the league 2 years ago, everyone was expecting that he would light it up heading into 2007. Alex Smith was coming into his own; the offense would get better and the Niners were the hip choice to win their division and challenge in the playoffs. What happened? Teams became aware of Gore and shut him down. That element of surprise that rocketed him to stardom was gone and he was exposed as the marginal talent he is. He's not overly physical, elusive or fast. He posted good receiving numbers, but it doesn't indicate his receiving skills. He got a lot of dump off passes because the QB sucks and the receivers are garbage. He had a year that went way beyond his talents and the follow-up indicates as much. The great runners put up big numbers in spite of the fact that defenses are keying in on him.

Ronnie Brown, on the other hand, has been a sitting duck with a big bullseye on his jersey since he entered the league. Everyone's going to take note of the #2 overall pick; he's not surprising anyone. He took a couple years before he finally got rolling: In his rookie season, he split time with Ricky Williams. The following year was the first year he had ever carried a full load (in college he split time with Cadillac Williams) so there was a period of adjustment to be made. Last year, however, the light finally came on and, until his injury, was playing football better than any RB in the NFL. Better than any player at any position not named Brady. Period. Belichick himself said before their game that Brown was playing better than anyone in the AFC. He was unstoppable, despite being the target of opposing defenses, despite being on a team with no other offensive options, despite having a head coach that thought Jesse Chatman was somehow not useless and despite running behind one of the worst offensive lines in the NFL.

This is not at all a Brown love-fest and there's no homerism or fan interest; I could care less about the lolphins, BUT the man's got serious skills. It's not to say that Gore is useless or even bad at all: He's got good acceleration, balance and he's a good open-field runner. But he's not particularly shifty or overly powerful. He won't juke a defender out of his jockstrap or, failing that, simply knock him on his keester like Brown will. All in all, Gore is a decent, if unspectacular player who had a season that was better than he really is. Don't act like that doesn't happen; Shaun Alexander made a career out of them.

Ronnie Brown, on the other hand, is special. He's in the elite class of runner. In this generation of football, LT will be the RB classified as truly "great" and, IMO, already ranks alongside the greatest to ever play the position. Other than Jim Brown, I don't think there is one player that really stands out above LT. AD may join those ranks, but it's too early to tell. But the top talent guys, in the tier just below LT, are guys like Steven Jackson, Larry Johnson, if he can get back on form, and Ronnie Brown. Big, fast, strong, they'll run around you, they'll run over you, they can catch, they can do it all. In terms of talent, Brown is well above Gore. IF, and it's a big "if", Brown can recover from the ACL tear 100% and stay healthy, he'll be a beast.

But, hey, disagree if you like. I'm sure many people do. Everyone's got the right to be wrong (myself included). :hihi:

:hihi:

When watching Brown run behind Miami's line this year, it's pretty much safe to say that Brown is a stud. Miami's line was atrocious this year, I don't know if you seen what happened to John Beck later in the year, but teams were blitzing on him like crazy and the line couldn't give Beck more than a second to get rid of the ball. Not to mention, when Brown went down for the season, there was a huge drop-off in the run game for Miami. Early in the year, many people were saying "Miami's offensive line has been their MVP, they have really improved" but I can't say the same because our offensive line was bad. It's just that Ronnie Brown made them look good. Would I take Brown over Gore? Yeah. Right now can I say that Brown is ten times better than Gore? Not really... We'll see how things go this year, it depends on if Brown can recover from that ACL injury. I hope he can, because he was definitely going to the pro bowl before that happened. Sad thing is that he got injured because he tried to tackle a defensive player after the ball was intercepted...

Agreed. I was so excited to see Brown running behind Hudson Houck's line; I thought he was going to tear it up. The line was garbage, but he tore it up anyway. The running game suffered big time when he went down and the line was exposed. Beck looked positively shell-shocked at times. Getting Jake Long to protect his blindside and open up holes for Brown makes the most sense in the draft.

BTW, it seems as though I did indicate that he was 10x better than Gore, because of the 10 > I put in. It was an exaggeration; I only put in 8 for accuracy, the last 2 were for effect. :hihi: In all seriousness, Gore's not bad, but I do think that Brown is better.
