Free Agent Pickups:
DT Corey Williams (our biggest splash) – Packers
~ He could give us the penetration we need from the middle to free up Grant and Smith.
CB Drayton Florence – Chargers
~ Definitely a good #2 CB and an immediate upgrade over anyone on our roster not named Mike McKenzie.
WR Andre’ Davis – Texans
~ Not a great WR, probably more of a #3 or 4, but a great return man and will probably be allowed to leave since the Texans drafted Jacoby Jones last year.
LB Landon Johnson – Bengals
~ I think he could come in and replace Shanle, who would be great depth. He is versatile enough to play MLB, but I think we get another guy for that spot. Had 109 tackles last year.
“2007 PARTICIPATION: Started every game for the second straight year, and has played in every game (65, including postseason) of his pro career ... Opened Games 1-8 at WLB, but was moved to starting MLB for Games 9-16 after injuries depleted that position.”

LB Victor Hobson – Jets
~ Could come in at the MLB position and immediately make our D better. Has done good as a backup and could turn into a great starter in my opinion. Had 62 tackles last year.
FS Eugene Wilson – Patriots
~ I’m not sure if NE will let both him and Asante leave, but I hope we get this guy. A good coverage FS that would limit the big plays that have plagued us.
QB Cleo Lemon – Dolphins
~ I think Palko will be given every chance possible to take the #2 spot, but Lemon wouldn’t be a bad idea. If I’m not mistaken, he was with Carmichael in San Diego, so that would be a possible connection to the team.

2008 NFL Draft:
Round 1 CB Mike Jenkins – South Florida
~ Between Jenkins, Florence, and Young, the future of our secondary would look bright. I think drafting a corner in round 1 would go a long way towards improving our defense.
Round 2 DT Frank Okam – Texas
~ Big guy who also has the ability to penetrate. Could rotate with Hollis to keep our interior DL fresh.
Round 3 TE Kellen Davis – Michigan State
~ It’s about time we finally draft a TE, and I like Davis a lot. I heard Pat Kirwan on Sirius speaking highly of him at the Senior Bowl and said that he has also shown the ability to possibly be a good situational pass rusher.
Round 4 LB Vince Hall – Virginia Tech
~ Could sit behind Hobson for a couple years before taking over the middle of the Defense.
Round 5 WR Lavelle Hawkins – California
~ Had a good Senior Bowl week. Could develop into a good slot receiver and might possibly be able to return some kicks.
Round 6 DE Jeremy Thompson – Wake Forest
~ A bit of a smaller DE at 264 pounds, but could potentially be the rush specialist we need.
Round 7 C Adam Spieker – Missouri
~ Injects some youth into the center of the OL and could develop over time.

Summary:
People will say that we will never sign and draft this many defensive players. I, however, think that Sean and Mickey understand that our defense basically needs a complete overhaul (barring a few players) and that they will make a majority of our offseason moves on the defensive side of the ball. I left out our resignings because they will be apparent on my projected roster.

It looks good but I think that we need more LB help then Landon Johnson and Victor Hobson.

I would swap out the Frank Okam pick for Jerod Mayo or Curtis Lofton.

Okam would probally be there in the 3rd round, it seems like hewill be at this point at least.
Good Offseason overall.

Don't forget that we'll need a lot of $ to re-sign Evan, Colston, and W.Smith. (Whether we extend this year or re-sign after next year, we'll need some of this year's cap money to do it). We'll probably extend J.Brown soon too. If we make moves in FA, I expect it to be one or two corner pieces (a la Brees and Fujita a couple years ago).

I like you draft and FA acquistions for the most part, but those linebackers are nothing special, you just signed a bunch of cheap replacements, it makes no sense to go corner in the first round, when its the pass rush that needs improvement, that front seven needs a big shot of youth...i wouldnt go corner till the third, after I got my linebacker and DT. in rounds 1 and 2.

Some good players at prices that would not break the bank. Good post, thanks for the time you put into it.

That's a good start and it fills most of the team needs. I wanted to post a link to a site that lists saints team needs: http://football.about.com/od/teamneeds/a/teamneeds_NO.htm
Here are the needs as listed on the site:
1)CB to replace David
2)MLB
3)Nose Tackle to replace aging Hollis Thomas
4)DT to replace Brian Young
5)CB to play dime
6)Return Specialist
7)OLB to back up Shanle ( I would hope to replace him)

This list assumes that McKenzie is coming back. And all but one are on defense.

I second that...

I agree. Nice offseason overall, but all I've heard is how deep the CB position is in this year's draft. If that's true, you should probably be able to grab a good one in rounds 2-4.

I thought O.J. Mayo was a G for USC's hoops team... I don't think he's quite ready to take on the role of an NFL MLB.

Just bustin your stones a little babyblack...

Seriously though, I'm hoping we really go after Corey Williams hard. He would be the best FA signing we could make IMHO... A young, up-and-coming, athletic DT with a bunch of upside, that can provide a pass-rush up the gut and really has it all.

I want Williams even more than Haynesworth.

matt forte at round 6? why in the world do you think 32 teams will pass by him 5 times and 9 of them 6 times?

DT Starks - WR Johnson - CB Florence

1. CB Jenkins 2. MLB Lofton 3. WR Bowman 4. DT Okam 5. OLB Butler 6. DT Shirley 7. TE Sperry

Affordable. Possible. Fills needs.
