2013 Draft Big Board and Mock Draft

I have always wanted to do a mock draft, but I have come to the conclusion it is an act of utter futility, to try to figure out/guess on how some people I've never met value certain players, so I decided to do a Draft Big Board instead. This is my "Best Available Player" scenario only. No guessing on what players will be drafted where, just who I believe are the BPA's in order from 1 to 50. Certain positions are valued over others, so for instance Warmack is maybe the best player in the draft at his position but because he is a guard, he is not as valuable as an OT, etc. Jarvis Jones is still a big question mark for me, cause his workouts have been terrible, and he has the spinal stenosis, but watch him play, he is definitely top 10. Oh well, here it goes. Comments?

I'm not gung-ho over SI, but I used it as a "first-guess" comparison. I also included the first three from ESPN Insider.

Sports Illustrated (SI) 1st Round picks not on your list (i.e. - that DID NOT make your top 50):

<s>#27 - Keenan Allen (WR - California)</s>
#29 - D.J. Hayden (CB - Houston)

You took a lot of time, and made some intriguing choices. Pretty good analysis, Tyler! Lots of other Mock Drafts are here (from other SSF members), and they are excellent as well.

We're making some good choices with free agents right now, and that will enable us to take the BPA on Draft Day '13. We'll see how it all shakes out in late April.

He has Keenan Allen at 16...unless he edited it after your comment.

Good catch; thanks. Fixed.

I had it in the comments, but obviously overlooked it.

Pretty decent analysis, IMO. I hope some of his projections pan-out as anticipated. This is a nice draft class, and there may be several UDFA's that make the grade as well. We may very well have a BONANZA of UDFA's (which would be great, since we have been robbed on regular draft picks by the Fuhrer).

Good work. A few things that jump out to me (my opinion of course):

 • Your really high on Werner (higher than me).
 • Your really high on Jarvis Jones(higher than me).
 • Glad to see someone giving Williams out of UNC some props. Good player.
 • I think Cyprien is a better player than Reid and Elam, and possibly Vaccaro.
 • Your pretty high on Jamie Collins.
 • Wow, Margus Hunt!
 • I'd put Austin higher, a lot higher.
 • Cooper is lower than I've seen him on any board. You think he's a zone only player?
 • The Montee Ball placement is interesting, higher than I would have put him. He don't see any great qualities, but he is a solid player. This is just based off watching him on TV though, no film study of course.
 • I think Authur Brown is arguably a top 15, top 20 player.
 • Carradine is top 10 to me (assuming he's healthy).
 • I'm higher on Dantone Jones than you are. Dude can win in a number of ways.

Again, good work putting this together. I don't agree with all of it but I can appreciate what it takes to do this stuff.

Word! This and the many other mock drafts at SSF are great. It has helped me get even better acquainted with who may be picked up by the Black & Gold.

Thanks to all who posted their thoughts. I did a little independent film study, and a whole lotta reading prospect analysis, from different sites. Since I did not get a whole lotta posts on my draft prospect big boar, and had my big board done, I went ahead and did the mock draft. The big board is really the first step anyway, so you can see who ranks as BPA, when you draft. I assumed no trades, and just put BPA if they also fit the scheme and was a team need. If BPA did not fit, I found next BPA that fit. Here it goes.
2013 Mock Draft
1. Kansas City Chiefs - Luke Joeckel – OT, Texas A&M
2. Jacksonville Jaguars – Dee Milliner – CB, Alabama
3. Oakland Raiders - Shariff Floyd – DT, Florida
4. Philadelphia Eagles - Eric Fisher – OT, Cent. Mich.
5. Detroit Lions – Bjoern Werner – DE, Florida St.
6. Cleveland Browns - Dion Jordan – OLB, Oregon
7. Arizona Cardinals – Geno Smith – QB, West Virginia
8. Buffalo Bills – Matt Barkley – QB, USC
9. New York Jets - Jarvis Jones – OLB, Georgia
10. Tennessee Titans – Star Lotulelei – DT, Utah
11. San Diego Chargers - Lane Johnson – OT, Oklahoma
12. Miami Dolphins – Chance Warmack – OG, Alabama
13. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Sheldon Richardson – DT, Missouri
14. Carolina Panthers - Xaxier Rhodes – CB, Florida St.
15. New Orleans Saints – Barkevious Mingo – OLB, LSU
16. St. Louis Rams - D.J. Fluker –OT, Alabama
17. Pittsurgh Steelers - Alec Ogletree – LB, Georgia

24. Indianapolis Colts - Kenny Vaccaro – S, Texas
25. Minnesota Vikings - Ezekiel Ansah – DE, BYU
26. Green Bay Packers - Matt Elam – S, Florida

30. Atlanta Falcons - Tyler Eifert – TE, Notre Dame

Solid mock man. A few thoughts:

 • I don't think Pitt goes ILB. OLB or Safety seems to be their primary needs.
 • The Tampa pick of Richardson is interesting. They already have McCoy as a 3-tech and Richardson fills that same slot. Do you envision something similar to what the Lions do with Fairley and Suh? I'd like to hear your thought process on that one.
 • I love the Williams to Dallas pick. Underrated prospect.
 • CB to the G-Men is interesting.
 • Your pretty high on Collins. How do you see him fitting in in Cinny? Von Miller type role?
 • Allen to the Bears is an interesting pick. I think they are in desperate need of O-line help and would love to see Fluker sitting there. A weapon opposite Marshall wouldn't hurt if Kromer thinks he can work with what he has.
 • Cooper to Houston is an incredible fit. That dude can flat out move and get to the next level.

You have a much lower rating for Ziggy Ansah than most analysts. I'm not saying you're wrong because who knows how he will translate to the pros. I would have him in the top 10 though, simply based on his freakish athleticism.

This is a completely subjective thing...and the truth is that your list looks pretty informed. Mine is different...but that isn't to say it is any better than yours.

I agree...my draft is weighted toward LT, OLB (SOLB>WOLB), S, and DL. Players from other positions are lower on my board with the exception of Millner and Rhodes who are still pretty high...but still not higher than my top LT, OLB, and DL guys.

I completely disagree about Floyd. I think that Richardson and Star are MUCH better players. Floyd is probably the most overrated guy in the draft. I also have Ogletree lower on my board. He is NOT a special ILB...and considering that it is not really a need at all (Lofton, Hawthorne, Vilma, and Wilson best project at ILB)...I have Ogletree much lower.

I am also a big fan of Collins...actually a bigger fan than you. :)

I actually see Ogletree with the versatility to play OLB, which is why I put him there.
As far as Richardson to TB. I was on the fence between he and Rhodes. I went with Richardson here since they lost Roy Miller to FA, and just thought they could not pass up Richardson here, eventhough they have McCoy.
I think the Bengals get in Collins what they currently lack in their LB corps, some speed and athleticism.
The Bears got Bushrod to address LT, and I think they will address interior line later in the draft, and dont pass up the chance to add another weapon into their passing attack. A Lance Moore type receiver with a little better size.

Interesting thought on Ogletree. He's shown signs that he can play here but I don't think it can be a full-time gig for him. A Daryl Washington role would probably suit him well.

Also, I get your point on TB, I just wonder about having two 3-techs and how that will work. Not sure you can do that in your base defense because you'll get run at unless one of them are really stout (which I don't think is the case here). Detroit gets away with it so it isn't unprecedented.
