2016 Saints Offense could be NFL's Best Ever (1 Viewer)

If the defense really steps up and gives us more possessions this season then I can see us approaching 2009 good. 2011 is a whole other level. It was the perfect combination of weapons, a prime Drew and one of, if not, the best offensive lines in the league. The disparity between Sproles and Graham made teams have to cover the entire field. The 49ers couldn't even do that giving up big touchdowns to both Graham and Sproles.

We may have a talented tight end in Fleener, Lasco or Spiller could develop into the scatback we want and need, but Sproles was perfect for it and still dominates that position on another team. Graham was young, fearless and too big to cover. I would say those two skill positions put us over the top, but like others have said, the o-line is really where all the success comes from.

This offense is capable of going 3 and out up to 5 times in a row in a single game.

This offense commits drive killing penalties routinely.

This offense regularly last year didn't put up stats or points until the last quarter of the game where opponent has sufficient leads to play a prevent defense.

This offense regularly struggles against physical defenses.

This offense has become turnover prone both with running backs fumbling and Brees forcing balls in to make something happen.

Wide receivers routinely drop balls that hit them in the hands.

If the offense can manage to get into field goal range, our kickers seem to miss half the time...

...but its the defense that is the problem...

Future Hall of Famer Drew Brees is still our Quarterback.
Sean Payton is still our coach.
On any given Sunday we can score 40 points and have 40 first downs.
We shatter records on a regular basis.
And this season we have weapons everywhere.

Please take a minute and just savor these facts.

The 2011 OL was Nicks and Evans. DLP, Strief and Bushrod weren't world beaters.

Unger and Armstead are top 3 at C and LT. If Strief, Peat, Kelemete, Lelito, Allen and Turner can be even slightly above average at the other 3 spots we're golden.

Ingram, Spiller, Hightower, Lasco, Murphy and Cadet is the deepest RB group we've ever had.

Kuhn could be the best FB we've ever had.

Cooks, Snead, Fleener, Coleman, Thomas, Hooman and Lewis look to be as good or better a group as any Drew's broken records with before.

Our offense is tops in the league year after year.
Just the fact that we are arguing whether or not our offense will or won't be the single greatest offense ever in the entire history of the NFL is pretty awesome.

During those years, we had an offensive line that protected Drew pretty well.
We had WRs that opposing defenses respected.

We had a group of RBs that were a threat to score (or gain a lot of yards)
when they touched the ball

We had RBs that commanded a DB to cover them when lineup in the backfield, which opened opportunities for the other WRs/TEs.

To give the current offense the benefit of the doubt, we don't know how much of an impact that Fleener will have on the offense, we don't know much of an impact that Thomas will have, we don't know how the offensive line will look, and we don't know how much of an impact that a healthy Spiller will have.

I understand that MT has been making a lot of plays in training camp and the one game we've seen him in, but how we don't know how well he'll respond when teams start to double him, or actually game plan against him.

The Saints want to try to run the ball more. So if we're trying to force the ball, and only averaging 2-3 yards per carry, then we go into an obvious passing situation, which will sometimes play into the defense hands.

We've seen signs of it last year, and only time will tell to see if we've done enough to address the issues.

You're right. I am not sure if we've done enough to address those problems. Another reason for all the passing yards we gained is because the defense gave up a lead real early in the game, so we had no choice.

But Jeff, we fixed all that in the draft and in training camp.

While I appreciate the enthusiasm and positivity, the term "facts" is being applied a bit too loosely here. I only count two.

Tough crowd. By all means... lets talk more about Sheldon's broken leg.

Not sure why all the negative comments. There is no doubt there is potential for this offense to be one of the best all time. Blame the O line all you want but in actuality it's the defense that holds us back more than the O line. The reason why we won a super bowl is because while out offense was unpredictable it was the defense that made it that way. They were able to stop other offenses and give our offense the ability to control the game. The defense we have had the last couple of years is putting our offense behind very early and forcing our O do be one dimensional. You force our O to have to throw every down and you've thrown out half the playbook and you are putting way to much pressure on the O line. You have to keep the defense guessing and that was something we couldn't do last year with having to play catch up all season.
I'll go on a limb myself and say if the defense is top 20, we will have one of our best offenses ever. The O line is a lot better than they get credit for.

This offense *can* be very good. It can even be great. But greatest? Not likely. BUT STILL POSSIBLE...

That 2011 offense put up 62pts, 49pts, 40+ pts 5 other times, and perhaps the most impressive accomplishment, they put up 32pts on the road with 5 turnovers against the most loaded-with-talent defense in the last 15+ years. Seriously, go back and look at the 9'ers 11 defensive starters, lol. It was a dang all star team.

That game.............

Because of the way that game ended, its obviously hard to look upon it fondly. But that season, we were the only team to score 30+ on that defense.

That was truly an epic matchup. One of the greatest defenses of all time, somewhat forgotten because of a muffed punt, going up against the greatest offense. It was a rough way to end an historic season, but it was truly incredible to watch us claw back into that game after nearly giving it away in the first 20 minutes.

We won't approach that 2011 team. That was the best offense ever.

Biggest issue this year is the O-Line. All the best QBs and skill players in the world won't matter if we can't block.

We had a lot of the same o-line problems going into that season and even worse mid season. They worked themselves out though and everyone now considers that o-line to be one of the best.

Starting the season we had Old man Kreutz at center and Strief taking over at RT. Strief and Kreutz struggled out of the gate, but we were able to get by with adequate defense and a good run game.

Kreutz ended up quitting on us after about 3 games and then we plugged in some unknown undrafted center (at the time).

Strief took his lumps early and often and we used a lot of tactics to help him out on that side.

A solid offensive showing can be done, the sky is the limit. It just all comes down to coaching and execution.

I beg to differ because of the offensive line .... except for the left tackle and the center position, all other positions are suspect ....
