2018 Prospects to Watch (2 Viewers)

I really like Ta'amu. He has some holes in his game, but he has real life upside. Plus, coaching and experience can help improve his weaknesses, namely not progressing and reading the entire field. I think Ta'amu would be an interesting project player for Payton, given his arm and accuracy at all 3 levels of the field and RPO ability. If he was there, I'd love to see us use one of our later day 3 picks on him. And I like Renell Wren a lot, too. That dude's already a really disruptive and explosive DT. Now, imagine if we drafted Wren and Ryan Nielsen got his hand on him? Wren w/Brown, David O, Stallworth and Edwards would be just fine! Then when Rankins gets healthy...Even better!

NICE! Piggy backing on that, and echoing our lack of opportunities in the top 150 of the draft, Ireland and our personnel dept will def have their work cut out for them this year. On that note, here are some potential late RD/UDFA targets who I think could be diamonds in the rough.

EDGE/DE/OLB Maxx Crosby Eastern Michigan

LB Sione Takitaki BYU

LB Benny Burr-Kirven WASH

DT Ricky Walker VTech

DT Greg Gaines Wash

CB Mark Fields Clemson

TE Kahale Warring SDSU

WR John Ursua Hawaii

WR Stanley Morgan Jr. Nebraska

RB Benny Snell Jr. Kentucky

QB Jordan Ta’amu Ole’Miss

Thank you for being awesome as per usual. I didn’t know who most of these guys were prior to your post.

Thanks man! My bro's been doing the Scouting Academy, and though I myself am not enrolled, Ive been w/him every step of the way for 2 terms. The only positions we didnt get to were the OLs and QBs. It's really fascinating and not as cut and dry as I used to think grading/evaluating players had been. There's a whole lot of context and fits you have to take into mind when watching these players on film. The prospects Ive been posting are guys who I specifically think fit the DNA of our team. On that note, here a few more guys who I think fit our system.

EDGE/DL Shareef Miller Penn St
Love the size, use of length, and his relentlessness in pursuit. Miller's been a consistent player vs both the run and pass for the last 3 years. He seems to be a bit of a one trick pass rusher, but his vertical bull rush is one heck of trick. Coming in, he has some pad level inconsistencies, needs to be more active w/his hand violence coming off the ball, and flat out needs to hit the weight room. But all that stuff is coachable/trainable. I believe Miller's the type of day 3 prospect who coach Nielsen can mold into legit contributor as a rotational pressure specialist.

S/DB Khari Willis Michigan St
Willis is combo S who can play box, slot, and offers single high potential. He has really good instincts in coverage and gets his hands on a lot of passes. He's got the size and make up to be a force vs the run. He just needs to make the tackle vs perpetually trying to devastate a guy. Willis' only real knock are the questions regarding his overall athletic ability. I personally believe his combine numbers helped his cause in debunking those doubts.

WR Cody Thompson Toledo
Thompson reminds me a lot of fellow Rockets alum and former Saints great Lance Moore. I think Thompson has a similar skill set as Moore did, but in a much bigger frame, 6'2 200ish. Thompson's more twitch and technique, than he is athletic and fast. I think he'd be a good fit at slot in our O because of his soft hands and chain moving ability. Thompson prob wont get splash receptions over the top, but he'll def get you key 1st downs and a few TDs in RZ. Worst case, Thompson is a core STs guy who'll make a bunch of tackles and also has shown a penchant for blocking punts.

Another guy I think would be a great fit for the D would be CB/DB Saivion Smith from Bama. He's a big CB who can play press man and has potential in zone, too. Plus, that dude has a definite mean streak in his game. What's more, I heard Tony Pauline on the most recent Draft Analyst pod say that we're really infatuated in his skill set and potential. Saivion Smith could be a nice get on day 3, if he's there that is.
