We are on the brink of another exciting season of Saints football. Training camp is right around the corner for the Black and Gold. Like always, there will be players that will attempt to have an exceptional season that would allow them to earn a new contract in the future. One particular player for the Saints in that situation will be cornerback Eli Apple.

2019 Is a Make or Break Year for Eli Apple

I think Apple will have a solid season. Obviously he should be as focused and motivated as he's ever been considering what's at stake but beyond that he has a few things going in his favor.

He'll begin the year with a full offseason in DA's defense to go along with last year. That should be plenty of time for him to pickup everything and play without having to think as much. Last year he was thrown out there and it was a sink or swim situation. He did better than I expected in a new scheme and being constantly targeted. He gave up some plays but he made some big plays. That's just the nature of the position in today's version of the NFL. But he was usually in the general vicinity of his man when the ball was caught and that was a huge improvement.

The second thing he has going for him is that he'll be surrounded by the most talent he's ever had in his career. If Davenport takes the next step then the pass rush should be good. He'll be surrounded by talent and depth in the Secondary and if Lattimore returns to form he should have plenty of Safety help over the top.

He's going to see a lot of targets so he's going to have an opportunity to make a lot of plays and put up some stats. We'll see.
