There's a flip side of that coin though, they didn't have a choice to get paid. Something that is unique to college sports.

They can choose to play college ball or not play college ball. It’s not mandatory.

I don't have a problem with Chase not playing. It's a business decision. This time next year he'll be a millionaire. It does suck as a fan though.

This is what happens when you don't pay people whose work is worth Millions. He's simply choosing not to work for free in a high risk business at this point. Smart move by Chase, particularly this season.

This is very short sighted unless you think all college football programs are making crap loads of money. Or that football isn't subsidizing other sports and their student scholarships

The McDonald's franchise in my local town doesn't make crap loads of money so they force anyone that wants to work in the food industry to work for free food for at least 3 years before they can get paid anywhere else.

Yep, doesn't make sense when I apply it to fast food workers so it sure doesn't make sense when applying it to the world class athletes.

What you are not saying is the top 25 college programs make a combined $2.5 Billion per year. That is enough to pay the players $1,000,000 per season for every player. Of course, we can all agree the scholarship is worth something, particularly to most Freshmen or backups that rarely see the field. Every D1 team should be forced to pay every student $500 per game they are on the roster. Double it for every player that takes on more than 10 snaps a game. If they are a starter double that. Any player that gets a 2nd round draft evaluation by an independent board can get $25k per game, 1st round evaluation gets $50k per game. If teams can't afford to pay the players that amount then they can drop down to D2 where players do not get paid.

For a team that has (2) 2nd round players, (2) 1st round players, 22 starters per game, 22 other players that get 10 snaps per game plus 40 other players that don't take a snap that adds up to a total of $236,000 per game. Only a handful of teams will have 4 players go in the first 2 rounds of a draft. So that number is well to the high side of average but all it would take for those big schools to pay something like that is adding a couple bucks for tickets. Cut those numbers in half if you allow players to sign sponsorship deals and suddenly they have a reason to hang around. Wont stop everyone from leaving or sitting out but would but progress.

So no, every college doesn't make a ton but Division 1 football makes enough to pay players without skipping a beat. Teams that would struggle to pay players that amount in Division 1 probably shouldn't be there anyway.

First of all, it isn't a job. Do you even realize that students on scholarship in medical and scientific fields aren't being paid for their research? Or do you only care about athletes?

Also using gross receipts is about as disingenuous as it gets. It looks good and sounds good, but it's crap and irrelevant. And why only pay D1 football players? That is pretty damned misogynist. Guess the time and effort women put in isn't worth anything to you.

You also fail to take into account the value of the training unless you think kids are NFL ready right out of high school and that the vast majority of even D1 kids aren't training for a career and are putting in as much time and effort. But they aren't worth as much either I guess
