The New Orleans Saints are gearing up for their Wild-Card Round kickoff against the Chicago Bears, but with the 2020 season in rearview there’s time to consider some team awards. Who earned Most Valuable Player? Which new pro is the Saints’ Rookie of the Year? Who deserves recognition as the Breakout Player of the Year, as well as the Most-Improved and Comeback Players of the Year?
Here are my picks for each of those honors:
Most Valuable Player: LT Terron Armstead
Armstead was a reliable blocker for the Saints all season, but he really stepped up late in the season. There may not be another player with as dominant game tape as he has in December. And Armstead deserves serious props for playing just as well with a rotating cast of quarterbacks counting on him to keep them clean — not just Drew Brees but Taysom Hill and Jameis Winston, too. Each of them requires a different approach to the game and Armstead’s pivoted from one to the other with ease. There’s also something to be said for him adjusting to four different left guards lining up next to him; Andrus Peat, Nick Easton, James Hurst, and Will Clapp have each taken reps there.
