They are in position to draft both Freiermuth AND Long.
Long is almost as good as Freiermuth and Mckitty has extra-soft 11 inch hands like Mike Thomas.
KYLE PITTS is the absolute cream of the crop this year at tight and will likely be the next star like George Kittle or Kelce, but the Saints have almost zero shot at him barring a trade up because he will likely go top ten.
The only free agents to speak of are Hunter Henry and Jonnu Smith but they aren't the type of game changers the saints need.
Adam Trautman is a great in-line blocker and route runner but lacks pure speed.
So far I've noticed 3 tight ends other than Pitts who could fill the #1 and #2 TE void should Cook depart.
Pat Freiermuth of Penn State--- reminiscent of Jeremy Shockey.
Hunter Long of Boston College--was second in receiving behind Pitts
Tre Mckitty of Georgia----Similar to Benjamin Watson and hails from the same Alma Mater.
The saints are in much better shape at wr and runner than TE, so do they take two in the first 3 rounds if they get to keep all of their picks?
While I don’t disagree the need for TE, but I do disagree with one of your points. If you look around the NFL, only a few teams have an elite TE, a handful have a good TE, some have a decent TE, and many have average, and so on.
Now, many teams in the NFL have a mixture of elite/great/good WRs. We don’t really have that and we haven’t had that in quite some time. Now granted we did get Sanders last year, but MT was hurt for the majority of the season, and we never got to see what our team could fully look like. Plus, Sanders could be a cap casualty. I truly miss the days of when we had a handful of WRs that did their job and SP would constantly call substitutions like every play. Somehow, we lost our way, and started trotting out the Krishawn Hogans, Austin Carrs, or whatever “camp beast” that everyone thinks would “break out”. We need some darn weapons and better depth at the WR spots. What we have isn’t cutting it. So, what I’m saying is that I think we need WR help more than TE. However, we could always find WRs via FA, but we definitely need some guys that can create separation.
Idk man, there are games where we have WRs that have 0 or 1 catch a game, despite playing a majority of snaps. It’s almost impossible for that to happen, unless the game plan intentionally calls to have them solely block, or not have them involved at all. Which I don’t think that is the case. SP wants the ball spread around, so does the QB (which was Drew). My other thought was that these said WRs never really gained Drew’s trust, which would also strengthen the notion that we need more WRs and TEs. The thing that gives me pause is that the TE position is one of the hardest to adjust to in the NFL. We still have a window, so if we did draft another one, then whoever it is would need to be sorta pro ready. I’m down for whatever at this point. I just want to see us put up points when we get into the playoffs.I think that Sanders and Thomas do create separation but I think that Thomas creates his separation underneath.
Hard to argue that a 1700 yard wr doesn't separate.
I don't think they lack at wr other than a big size mismatch guy like Colston or burner like Meachem.
I don't necessarily think they need a superstar at wr but having a roster with 2-3 solid guys at TE would be ideal.
I would be Happy With say Hunter Long, Quintin morris and Adam trautman
Don’t sleep on BYU TE (and Metairie native) Matt Bushman. He would have been a day 2 pick last season, but he went back to school to up his value, instead he tore his ACL before the season started (perhaps he could have been the difference over Coastal Carolina). Either way:
