2022 SEASON OPENER COUNTDOWN (5 Viewers)

#91, Jaleel Johnson.
Johnson was drafted in the fourth round by the Vikings in 2017. For the first three years with the Vikings he was a backup defensive tackle, but in 2020 he was a starter for all 16 games after Michael Pierce opted out of the season due to Covid concerns. Last spring he signed with the Texans but was released at the end of pre-season. The SAINTS signed him to their practice squad last September. Johnson was only with the SAINTS a week before the Texans signed him again off the SAINTS practice squad. In April of this year the SAINTS signed him a second time. Welcome back, Jaleel Johnson.

With ninety days to go before our season opener against Atlanta, we say hello to #90, Tanoh Kpassagnon. Kpassagnon was a second round draft pick in 2017 by Kansas City. He played there four years before signing with the SAINTS in March of 2021. After starting 5 games for us last year, Tanoh returns for his second year of his 2 year contract with the SAINTS.

#89, Rashid Shaheed. A 2021 undrafted free agent who we wanted so bad, we gave him a contract that guaranteed him $222,000. I am really looking forward to seeing if he can him return kicks like he did at Weber State.

#88, J.P. Holtz. Holtz came into the league as an undrafted free agent when he signed with the Cleveland Browns in 2016. He spent most of his first three years on the practice squads for Cleveland, and Washington. In 2019 he joined Chicago where he played both tight end and some time at fullback. He was back in Chicago for the 2020 and 2021 seasons. The SAINTS signed him in April of this year.

With eighty-seven days to go, we take a look at #87, Kawaan Baker. Kawaan played his collegiate days at the University of South Alabama and the SAINTS selected him in the seventh round of the 2021 draft. After he was released at the end of pre-season, Kawaan spent most of the last year on the SAINTS practice squad.

#86, Kahale Warring. Kahale played college football at San Diego State and was drafted by the Texans in the third round of the 2019 draft. He spent most of his first two years on IR with Houston, before being waived in August of 2021. He spent most of 2021 on the Bills and Jaquars practice squads. The SAINTS signed the 6' 5" tight end in May. During his first introduction to the local media, Bobby Hebert promptly thanked him for not going by his real name, Kahalekuiokalani Michael Wodehouse Warring.

With 85 days to go before our season opener we take a look at a local guy out of Destrehan High School, Kirk Merritt. A four-star recruit who began his college ball at Oregon and finished up at Arkansas State. He was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Dolphins in 2020. While he was active for a couple of games, he spent most of his time in Miami on their practice squad. In January of this year the SAINTS signed him to a futures contract. He is one of the new guys who has been mentioned as having some good days in OTA's and is getting noticed. Welcome home, Kirk Merritt.

#84, Dai'Jean Dixon. Dixon is another young wide receiver from the New Orleans area. He played at Edna Karr High School and led his team to a state title as a senior with 1004 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns. He started seven games as a true freshman at Nichols State. Dixon caught a pass in 50 straight games and set school career records for receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns previously held by former NFL receiver Mark Carrier. So we have two young local guys, fighting for a spot at wide receiver with the SAINTS.

#83, Juwan Johnson. Juwan joined the SAINTS as an un-drafted free agent wide- receiver in 2020. He was released at the end of preseason camp but was re-signed to the practice squad. He was elevated to the game roster for a few games his rookie year. In 2021, Johnson was moved to play tight end. He played in 14 games, had 13 receptions and (4) touchdowns. He had an awesome breakout game with two touchdowns in our beatdown of the Packers in last years season opener. It has been reported he has bulked up to 250 lbs this off season, with the hope it improves his blocking game.
