49ers coach Mike Nolan has mostly pleasant memories of visiting his family in New Orleans during the time his father, Dick, was head coach of the Saints.
Mike was a student at the University of Oregon at the time. "I just went home on the holidays," said Nolan, reminiscing about New Orleans where the 49ers play the Saints on Sunday. "I had a lot of fun. There were two good years and one bad year."
The bad year was 1980, when the Saints went 1-15 and the Aints were born with fans wearing paper bags over their heads. Dick Nolan was fired after the 12th game of the year, a 27-7 loss to the Rams on a Monday night that dropped the Saints´ record to 0-12.
"They had the bags out and, that was difficult," said Nolan.
