A few points for perspective ...
* When we signed Brees, he was injured just as Vilma is. If our doctors and trainers are right on Vilma like they were on Brees, we'll have an All-Pro quarterbacking both sides of the ball.
* Just because a free agent is a big "name," doesn't mean he would be a good addition to the team (character-wise). When we signed Joe Horn, nobody knew he would turn out to be an All-Pro and a leader (despite sour grapes upon his departure). So you can't judge by whether you get big names.
* Free agency is just a few days' old. Root for our team to find more "Joe Horns" (ascending players), even if people on this board complain that they're not a big name.
* Also, a lot of FA's have no intention of leaving their current team, but use free-agency to determine their market value. We don't hear what they've told their agents. We just hear they're available.
* Just because people give the FO the benefit of the doubt on moves that are too soon to be judged, doesn't mean we're making excuses. When we signed Brees, we FO excuse-makers were hoping they knew better than Miami in evaluating his chances of returning to form and being ready by the start of the season. We are glad we don't have to make an excuse for that one. When we did little to nothing last year to upgrade the defense, we were quite concerned though hopeful, and when our concerns proved valid, we did not make excuses. We don't need more mistakes like LB Brian Williams, who we just cut.
* Under Haslett, the Saints probably would have refused to admit Brian Williams was a mistake. Give Payton credit for admitting that mistake and hitting the reset button.
