Seeing as how the Jets fans tend to think of their team as "smash mouth", and the Saints as "soft", a question was brought to mind.

If you took the best "Finesse" team and the best "Brute Force" team out of the last 20 years and put them on a field....

Which would most likely win, and why?

Off the top of my head I'm thinking Vermeil Rams against the Cowher Steelers..

I'd probably take the Steelers.

It really could go either way. If the finesse team gets a quick lead, the game becomes a finesse game. Vice-versa.

whoever has the ball last.

smash mouth team would run the clock out.

Finesse team would score with <15 secs left on the clock

Oh yeah, I knew this was going to be a question loaded with "well, if..."s. Just a general opinion is what I was getting at from anyone.

And I think the "Vermeil Rams against the Cowher Steelers" is a pretty decent match for what I was thinking about...

Well, both statements have a definite ring of truth, but...

I would be of the opinion that the finesse team would likely have a lead towards the end. Come out hard and fast, scoring like mad, then hold on for dear life. (Cause it's gonna seriously irk the smash mouths.....)

The Rams beat the Titans in the Super Bowl in 1999 and that was finesse over smash mouth.

I'm gonna go look that one up then. I basically want to know (or see) "how" the game was won. By bone crunching strength or out finessing or what...

They won that one by one yard. A Rams linebacker stopped a Titans reciever on the 1 yard line on the final play of the game to seal the victory. It was a very evenly matched, hard fought game as I recall.

Ooohhh.. I remember that game now. Honestly though, I only remember that final play. (Memory ain't what it used to be....)

Gonna go hit up the stats from it...

Montana's or Young's 49's would toast any smashmouth team for the past 30 years...or ever. They were just too much on offense and also had very tough defenses. So their combo of O and D would be hard for any team to defeat. Only other well-balanced teams would have a chance (e.g. Dallas with Emmitt, Aikman, and Irvin...or Denver with Elway and their stable of RB's...or Green Bay with Brett and their RB's...all had fairly balanced offenses with quick-strike capability and solid-dominant defenses).

BTW...our Saints of 2009 lack only consistency on offense and a more dominant defense, although I suspect that our D will continue to gel and improve. We should know what we really have on D by week 8-9. That is about how long it usually takes for a "new" defense to start showing what they can do. I can't wait!!

The finesse team has to have a very good Defense to compliment. I believe we now have just that. The sky is the limit for the 2009 Saints.

Ok, in that game it looks like the Titans were simply out finessed. They played some hellacious ball though, keeping the Rams to 3 field goals on 3 trips into the red.

Excellent points!

Just more stuff to add to my processes.. Thanks!!

its a good thing we're not playing like a finesse team this year. we have a swarming, hard hitting D and an in your face run game. It would be nice if Mike Bell were playing so we could really ram it down their throat. Maybe L. Hamilton can play 'the hammer' this week.
