NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Sean Payton wanted to go to the Sugar Bowl this past week, not so much to scout college prospects as to sit back with his kids and "watch someone else worry about third down."
It was a brief chance for the rookie coach to see the Louisiana Superdome as a fan before he plays a central role in something New Orleans football fans have never seen: a Saints home game in the second round of the NFL playoffs.
The Superdome, a place of squalor and misery when it was used as a shelter during Hurricane Katrina, has been a far happier place this fall, thanks in large part to the Saints making the playoffs for only the sixth time in the franchise's four-decade history.
The fact the Superdome reopened in time for this season was considered a minor miracle, given that much of it needed to be gutted and cleaned, and its massive roof needed to be replaced.
