Aaron Glenn's experience as a former player is paying dividends for the Saints' secondary

By Nick Underhill -- Advocate

Ken Crawley wasn’t trusting his eyes.

The cornerback was often in position to make plays, but he struggled to get his hands on the ball during his four seasons at Colorado. It’s one of the reasons he finished his collegiate career with only three interceptions, and there’s a good chance it’s also why he wasn’t selected in the NFL draft.

It’s hard to believe that Crawley had those issues after watching him in training camp and the preseason, where he’s made a handful of interceptions and routinely breaks up passes, but that all happened before he met Aaron Glenn.

What did the Saints secondary coach tell Crawley?

“Just trusting my eyes,” he said. “My eyes are the key component to my technique.”

In the NFL, coaching can make all the difference. Glenn was a very good cornerback, and he seems to have made a big difference.

Good article...always felt that Glenn and Giunta would make a big difference. Part of me wonders if Giunta will be in the skybox helping to adjust based on what the offense is attempting to do. That birds eye view can be great for a D coordinator.

Another outstanding article by Underhill. I too believe the hiring of Glenn and Giunta is paying off big time.i have long believed with the salary cap good solid coaching and assistant coaches who can teach and improve technique are what really gets the most out of your mid to low level roster players

Sometimes the simplest fix is the most effective. Crawley in college was watching th QB in man and the receiver in zone. The opposite of what he should do, no wonder he has turned it around so fast.

Those last 2 CB spots could go to both UDFAs but Finnegan and Dixon will make it a tough cut.

Hiring Glenn, putting Brian Young in charge of the pass rush, and giving the power at LB to James Willis just might be what saves this teams defense.
I had no idea the LB coaching duties had been handed off to another Willis. So I guess this means Vitt is strictly assistant head coach?

Basically, but you see him put there teaching. The man is smart and very defensive minded, but as a full coordinator, ehh maybe not.

Great article. Would love to see that it's real and shows up on Sundays, and not just a nice camp story. We could really a steady, competent secondary. Glenn is a welcomed addition to the staff.

If we keep Crawley and Harris, and start PJ, we will essentially be giving Glenn 3 rookie CBS to work with. If he can mask their inexperience, and even make them look like seasoned players, I'm not sure how long we will have him as our db coach before somebody comes along and makes him a DC, or HC.

Great article. It's not what you do, but how you do it. After my days of active duty military, I joined the national guard. Was taking a map reading class, you know finding grid coordinates. The instructor made it as hard as Chinese arithmetic. Had to retake it with a different instructor. He made it so simple, that my five year old son could find an 8 digit coordinate
