We got the 4th best DE and 4th best CB available in FA this offseason. Not bad considering the guys ahead of them... and what they got paid... and some of them were franchised.

DEFENSIVE ENDS

1. Jared Allen, Kansas City *

2. Justin Smith, Cincinnati

3. Antwan Odom, Tennessee

4. Bobby McCray, Jacksonville

5. N.D. Kalu, Houston

6. Travis LaBoy, Tennessee

7. Josh Thomas, Indianapolis

8. Marques Douglas, San Francisco

CORNERBACKS

1. Asante Samuel, New England

2. Marcus Trufant, Seattle *

3. Drayton Florence, San Diego

4. Randall Gay, New England

AND, the 4th best DT - Brian Young!

I wonder if the McCray signing could force Grant inside? He has been somewhat of a non-factor as a RE.

Considering he plays LE, that's to be expected. LOL. Seriously, enough with the Grant to DT. He's a defensive end. Will Smith isn't going to be an OLB. Things are how they are.

imagine Ellis and Grant inside with Mcray and Smith bookending with Fujita, Vilma and Rivers as our front 7

Combined with trades and a good draft, this COULD prove to be a great off season. We already got Vilma. I'm hoping, though not hopeful, that we could trade for Lito Sheppard. There's a chance that we could get a new starting DT, CB, or WLB in the draft, or maybe even get lucky and get a FS or TE who could start for us in a later round, or get really really lucky and get more than one of the above in the draft. That would really be awesome.

It's great that we got the 4th best CB and the 4th best DE***. I didn't even think we really needed help at DE that urgently, but this could be a possible preparation for Will Smith's contract coming up. I'm surprised we made virtually no attempt to upgrade at the 3-tech DT spot. Re-signing Young was a good move depth-wise, but I am still hoping to upgrade that position in our starting lineup.

We are only a couple moves away from going into the draft without HAVING to desperately draft any single position, but as of right now we can't quite say we're there yet.

*** I put asterisks because I didn't want to quote that ranking without pointing out that there is some stuff on their lists that is questionable. On their list of top overall FAs available, they have Faneca at 6 behind Turner and Berrian, which I think is really silly.

Make an offer to Jovan Haye

Definitely not. He's tendered as a top RFA, which means the Saints would have to sign him to a big deal and give the Bucs our 1st and 3rd picks.

I didn't realize that when Randall Gay came out of LSU he ran a 4.28 at his pro day (not that that means much just didn't realize he was that quick).

He also went undrafted.....which tells you haw far he has come since he got out of college.
