now we can apply the same logic to Die Hard...

it's an action movie that takes place during Christmas, not a Christmas movie with action

The science elements also don't operate on real world known or speculative science. The space ships behave like they move within an atmosphere and make audible sounds in the vacuum of space, for example.
Well, lots of what can be considered sci-fi do similar. I can't recall a movie that really highlights the fact that there's no sound in space. A silent movie would kinda suck. Lol.

And certainly no flames in space.

Ever wonder what a nuclear explosion would look like in space?

I'm thinking Armageddon, yeah.

Then they're not actual scifi.

Armageddon is an action/adventure movie.

this i can agree with. Just Like Gremilins and just like Trading Places. they are movies that take place during christmas, but aren't christmas movies...

Those are all just trappings to tell a story. The science isn't the focus. The story isn't about how they got to that point technologically or how the technology has impacted them. And again, their science had no basis in real current or speculative science, which is the other importsnt definitional aspect of sci-fi. Much of their stuff is powered or made possible by magic crystals (kyber).

Star Trek had a lot of techno babble bullshirt but the space ships behave like space ships and a lot of explanations of things (especially from TNG onward) made an attempt to incorporate real science.

Lucas was inspired by Flash Gordon. He wanted to tell a pulpy adventure story in space, not something that focused on science and its impact.
but without the science of the ships and weapons, there is no story, then it can be Harry Potter...

I thought Lucas was inspired by westerns?

As an example of this, Neil Gaiman was known by everybody to be banging anything that moved on the con circuit. It was not a secret. People talked about how he had "harems" in various cities. He had goth groupies throwing themselves at him.

Now he's essentially been cancelled because those sexcapades have been brought to light and several women have accused him of sexual assault. Also just really gross and creepy power dynamic stuff. The stories are unpleasant.

Those days of cons are over.
