Inspired by Marsha's TV/Movie thread

Comedy and Drama are two very different animals, it's hard to be great at one, rare to be great at both

In your opinion who is great at both?

Just off the top of my head I'd say

Steve Carrell
Tom Hanks - lately his comedy is hosting SNL when is the last time he made a comedy movie?
Jonah Hill
Alec Baldwin
Robin Williams
Eddie Murphy - I wish he did more straight drama

Also off the top of my head,

Steve Buscemi
John C Reilly
Jim Carrey
Bill Murray
Jeff Bridges
Sam Rockwell
De Niro

I'm tempted to say Adam Sandler but I feel like you need more than one or two successful roles to qualify, so I'm not sure he qualifies for the comedy category.

my top 5, current:

Ryan Gosling
Dreamy Ryan Gosling
Funny Ryan Gosling
Steely-Eyed Ryan Gosling
Kristin Wiig

whoopi goldberg in Color Purple is the modern female actor i can think of that did the bill murray move

i think Patricia Clarkson and Catherine Keener are 1a/b right now

and tatiana maslany gets honorable mention for being both in the same role

I’d add Matt Damon, Jamie Fox and John Lithgow as well

Jamie Foxx as Ray Charles was pretty amazing

So weird. I actually brought this subject up to my wife just yesterday.

Christopher Walken
Robert DeNiro
Jim Carrey
Jeff Daniels
Tom Hanks

I feel like a great actor knows how to be anything. So in touch with ones emotions that they can convince themselves that they are whatever they need to be.

I think a great actor draws on their deepest emotions and pulls that moment out from within the compartments of our mind. We have all felt anger, sadness, happiness. We have all been hilarious in a moment, melancholic in a moment, angry in a moment. The best actors can recall those emotions with relative ease.
