Yeah, I wish we could have snuck him onto the Practice Squad
I think the Saints were so unimpressed by him that they did not even try to put him on the practice squad.
Pittsburgh was the 1st team to sign him, then Pittsburgh cut him. That would have been the perfect chance for the Saints to put him on the PS but they opted not to do so.
Now he goes to Tampa and is now starting.
Trade up in the draft to get him, then your division rival gets him for nothing and starting in his rookie season.
lus-un2: Good points, as usual.I don't know that the Saints didn't try to sign Woods to the PS, but that wouldn't change the present circumstances with Woods. Teams are free to sign any player off any practice squad to their roster, so him being on the Saints PS wouldn't prevent him from playing for the Bucs. IIRC, the Steelers signed him right after the rosters were trimmed to 53. Reggie Jones was waived on the same day as Woods.
IMO, it says a lot about the Saints scouting department that a team has a guy that couldn't make the active roster in their starting rotation.
Put it like this, if we had drafted Chris Ivory in the 4th round and signed Al Woods as an UDFA, would you be unhappy? Obviously not. So what does it matter that the situation was the inverse? QUOTE]
Yeah, but you can't look at it like that (at least I can't). Chris Ivory is a special find that acts like a bonus for us. We could have gotten a solid player in the 4th (probably a good special teams guy and maybe future starter). If you play it your way, then Ivory is not a bonus anymore (4th round pick) and Woods is a lost cause. However, if you play it my way, we could have a solid 4th round draft prospect (not Woods) in addition to a more than pleasent surprise in Ivory.
I'm glad to see that he has a job, just wasn't good enough to make the Saints team when they had a big need for a DT. I'm sure the only regrets the Saints have is trading up to pick him. " One man's garbage is another man's gold ".
