:covri:"BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley told a church crowd just moments into his new administration that those who have not accepted as their savior are not his brothers and sisters, shocking some critics who questioned Tuesday whether he can be fair to non-Christians.
"Anybody here today who has not acceptedas their savior, I'm telling you, you're not my brother and you're not my sister, and I want to be your brother," Bentley said Monday, his inauguration day, according to The The Anti-Defamation League on Tuesday called Bentley's remarks shocking."

Whoa. Folks in Alabama had better start believin in Jesus or they're going to be sorry.
I wonder if its the Baptist Jesus or the Protestant Jesus or Catholic Jesus?

He's a Baptist deacon in a predominently Baptist state and his Baptist blatherings are what got him elected in the first place.

What's really odd is that this is suddenly front page news.

It's ALABAMA, not MASSACHUSETTS.

So this is typical rhetoric from Alabama Governors on inauguration day?

Was George Wallace ever the governor? :hihi:

Actually, for Alabama, this is toned down.

I saw the story featured prominetly this morning on several of the national media websites

What you've got going here is the national media types going bat-so crazy over a state leader who is speaking to the level of his constituents rather doing a kowtow to political correctness.

So you're saying Alabama is full of stupid people and Massachusetts is full of smart people? I'd disagree with that statement.

No, I'm saying Alabama is full of Baptists and Massachusetts is full of people who tend to espouse political correctness.
Oh so you're saying Alabama is full of stupid Baptists and Massachusetts is full of non-stupid Baptists? Or that Alabama is full of rude Baptists and Massachusetts only has non-rude Baptists? Or that a Baptist who wouldn't say something stupid like that isn't a REAL Baptist?

Sorry man, I don't buy that "I can say stupid insensitive or offensive stuff and be a hero by calling myself 'anti-PC'" crap.

I'm not saying any of the junk you're making up.

The guy is a Baptist deacon in a Bible Belt Baptist state who got elected while spouting standard Bible Belt Baptist "holier than thou" rhetoric that I've heard all my life.

There's nothing new about that at all. What is new is various news sources acting all shocked and everything.

Geez, it's Ala-Redneck-bama.

You might as well get upset about Edwin Edwards saying the only way he'd lose is if he was caught in bed with a dead woman or a live boy. :hihi:

I guess this stuff plays well in Alabama. It harkens back to my old thread about the connection about the belief in God and getting elected to political office. In Alabama, you not only have to believe but you have to express that belief every chance you get.

I too believe in God and Jesus. As a Catholic though I ain't having no Baptist preach to me....

I wonder how his message is going to play to the 70% of the state that believes Jesus resides in Tuscaloosa.
He held his victory party in Bryant-Denny.

He is a complete baffoon. He was only elected because in the run-off for the Republican primary the teacher's union got out the vote from democrats, since it was an open primary, because the other guy wanted to weaken the power of the teacher's union in this state, which is incredibly powerful. They came out in droves, their guy won, and of course won the governorship over an equally as bad democrat.
