The New Orleans Saints announced a flurry of roster moves on Monday following a competitive weekend of rookie minicamp practices, putting their total number of players signed at 87. With just 90 potential roster spots available, they’re nearing capacity and this group should be expected to carry over into training camp later in the summer.
With just three spots still available, it’s fair to wonder why the Saints didn’t just fill out the list. Maybe they want to bring more tryout players into organized team activities in the coming weeks for another look. Or, they could be watching the veteran free agent market in case an upgrade becomes available (like Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive tackle Gerald McCoy) or if they have to look elsewhere (maybe former Los Angeles Rams defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh). They could also add another kicker or punter to push Wil Lutz and Thomas Morstead.
