I thought Fyter Fest was a good show in parts but at other times it felt like an Indy show with a big budget, and that stuff doesn’t translate to a promotion trying to establish itself as a credible national outfit.
This promotion has a heap of goodwill and has already put on some really high-quality matches (Cody v Dustin, the six man tag at FF) but some of the other stuff like the librarians, Jebailey being on the pre-show yesterday and that initial battle royale at DON just scream indy-riffic. I make this observation too because I want these guys to succeed desperately (I already own two AEW shirts, bought Double or Nothing and FF which was not free in Australia).
Fully agree with MJF being a star in the making, but think their roster is still lacking depth. I’ve been watching a heap of NJPW and went to their Southern Showdown event the other night with Ospreay v Eagles which is the best live match I’ve ever seen and a clear MOTY candidate for 2019. The key takeout on any NJPW show though is that guys like Okada, Tanahashi, Ospreay, etc all look like huge stars and back it up in the ring to a level unmatched anywhere.
I don’t see that with many guys in AEW who fit this criteria at the moment - Omega obviously, Mox ... Y2J to a degree but I thought he was exposed at Dominion. For a guy like Janela who is a great character, has cool attire and is a versatile worker, it’d just take him getting in slightly better shape and applying some tanning lotion to look like a true upper / midcard guy. I’m not sold on Page at all as the #1 contender to the HW title though and there seems to be a pronounced drop-off outside of 4-5 major guys.
Anyway - early days yet, still super exciting to have a promotion with this platform and opportunity. Hopefully they can take it.
