All-Time Greatest New Orleans Saints Draft? (1 Viewer)

2006 Draft was solid as well.

posted this last year when there was a big debate over whether 2006 was the best ever draft...thought it might still be interesting:
It's probably worth reminding you young bucks of just how elite that 81 draft was: ;)

New Orleans Saints 1981
1. George Rogers RB
Holds Saints single game and season records. Four 1,000 yard rushing seasons and two pro-bowls. Saints Hall of Fame
2a. Russell Gary DB
Played 6 seasons with the Saints.
2b Rickey Jackson LB
All -time great, future Hall of Famer, 13 years with Saints, Six pro-bowls. Saints Hall of Fame.
3a. Frank Warren DE
13 years with the Saints, 52.5 career sacks. Saints Hall of Fame.
3b. Hoby Brenner TE
13 years with Saints, pro-bowler, 267 catces and 21 TDS. Saints Hall of Fame.
5a. Louis Oubre T
5b Jerry Boyarksy DT
1 season with Saints - 9 in NFL.
6a. Nat Hudson G
6b Johnnie Poe CB
7 years with Saints - 17ints, 7 in one season.
6c Glenn Redd LB
5 years with Saints.
7. Kevin Williams WR
8a. Gene Gladys LB
8b Kevin Evans DB
9. Toussaint Tyler RB
2 seasons with Saints
10. Hokie Gajan RB
4 seasons with Saints, career figures of more than 1,300 yards rushing at 5.4 avg, 63 receptions and 13 TDs.
11. Lester Mickens WR
12. Jim Wilks DE
13 Seasons with Saints 45 sacks, Saints Hall of Fame.

Or in other words 7 future starters, 9 pro-bowls, and 5 future Saints Hall of Famers.
Still think 2006 is better?

Hate to point out the obvious but since this is all about hind-sight, Lawrence Taylor was also taken in 1981... It might be our best draft ever, but despite having the #1 pick we still didn't get the best player in the draft (and one of the best defensive players ever).

Well, the 2006 draft class did have a huge hand in getting the Saints all the way to the NFCCG.

and to add...being elected to the Saints Hall of Fame isn't really saying a whole lot.

I would say that 81 and 86 were great years for us, but I was blown away to actually look at our draft history. It was my first time as you can tell. I can't believe the drafting, no wonder we were consistent loseres. We had drafts where we picked 4 RB's? That is hard to believe even reading it, lol. We must have been nuts, and in other years we almost always selected multiple DB's and LB's. Couldn't any of them play? And who was doing the evaluating? It's really commical to see, and makes me feel much better about the thought and assessments that go into our drafting now to fill several needs not just one or two in a draft.
