They were looking to move forward with a younger option. I guess the GM was more comfortable offering a longer contract to a younger player. Should be interesting to see if Amendola can handle the work load of Welker and staying healthy.

Adam Schefter said on ESPN the Patriots had this offer on the table to Welker but things "got personal and messy" as they sometimes do in this process.
