Do yall believe they will start for this team??

I believe they can push for a lot of playing time because Stinkcomb and Nesbit were the two weak links on our line.. Also Alleman was a 3rd round pick and Bushrod was a 4th round pick, so they arent slouches

I posted this in an old "evaluate our OL" thread about both guys -

Andy Alleman - here's what I saw last preseason.....Alleman was completely overmatched by even camp body DTs. He spent most his PT shooting backwards into the backfield. His 295 lb weight showed when he playing against 300+ lb DTs. He was converted from DT to Guard at Akron. I was hoping he'd be Jahri Evans part II instead he looks like a long term project that best shot in the NFL might be at Center.

Jermon Bushrod - I like this kid, He has the complete package of size, strength, speed, and natural athletic ability. But....his last preseason was almost as rough as Alleman's. He really got taken to the woodshed when he faced former starting DE, Anthony Hargrove, in the preseason. But after seeing both rookies, Alleman and Bushrod, I'd say Bushrod is much closer to seeing the field.

The thing about our O-line is it pretty deep. I wouldn't suprise me if these guys saw more time this year. I can't see either one of them replacing stinch as a starter. Only way he is not a starter is if We draft a Left OT in the first and move brown back to right. I know its not one of our bigger needs but the FO has shown that you can never predict who the take in the first round.

Streif should start at RT, he's looked really good when he's gotten the chance.

good point...

He is probably the backup most ready to see the starting lineup.

We have a problem at O-line most times would love to have. We are talking about weak links in a O-line that gave up only 16 sacks last year. THey could of done better on rush blocking but the rushing backs didn't have bad ypc except bush.

bush 3.7 ypc
stecker 3.9 ypc( not bad for a carrer backup and third down guy)
Thomas 4.8 ypc (pretty good for a UDR)

But we difinately need to improve on the short yard plays.

I'm with you cdogg, i've said many times i wish Streif would replace Stinch at RT. He's huge, strong and moves well. When you hold Julius Peppers to no defensive stats and Simeon Rice your doing pretty well for yourself.

Yes I agree, I always did like Zach.. I never for once like Stinch...

I think Nesbit could hold his own for another year or two, while alleman pollishes up

We have great depth for the O-line though...can't discount that...

Bushrod looks like he is going to be a stud. While Alleman, looks like he is very very RAW.

In some ways I think Sean Payton's team can be like Billy Beane's front office team in moneyball. Early on they established reputations for draft genius. Then Beane got cute and took the fat catcher and others, who everyone then imagined would produce because of the reputation. But honestly a lot of these small school or amazing value picks from Payton's second draft may be busts. I hope they work harder in their third draft.

Don't forget they were chipping in that game. He had TE or FB support to help him a number of downs. Strief played alright, but he looked nervous as can be and got lit up a few times. Without support, he would have been in trouble.

Good analysis Ti - I think the resigning of Nesbit told us all we need to know about the readiness of Alleman and Bushrod. Maybe in the future these raw athletes will come good, but I would be surprised if either featured much this season.

Every tackle gets help when playing the best in the league, especially on the QB's blind side. He's performed very well in limited duty.

Bushrod looked fantastic for a rookie 4th round pick last season. We don't know what he can do because he was never on the field against top notch competition but I will say the guy has excellent quickness. If he improves his technique some and gets a little stronger I could certainly see him making his way into the starting lineup.

As for Alleman, it is difficult to get a read on OG in limited action. I don't recall him messing up any blocking assignments and remember our line getting a nice push when he was in the game but it is hard to say without seeing him play more.

I think we have a good solid pass protection group. I expect that we will have another stellar year of low sack totals against us.

My question is about run blocking. I know people have made the point that it is Reggie's between the tackles learning curve that has made them look bad, but I have not really paid attention enough to see for sure. I can tell you that the best in the business (Minn) blows open holes that I don't see our line creating, but that doesn't mean that they don't do a decent job...

I need to go back and review some games to really see what I think...

Here's my entire post from that thread concerning our OL for those that are interested -

LT Jammal Brown - started the year off rough. His training camp knee injury slowed him down a step off the snap. As his knee improved so did his play. He still has great footwork and strength. But he was a step slower this year and that caused him to struggle with smaller speed rushers off the edge.

LG - Jamar Nesbit - well.....he's a decent pass blocker. On running downs he tends to lose at the point of attack and either remains in the supposed hole or is shoved out of the way. Now I will say this Nesbit's running blocking looked much better when the larger J. Goodwin was subbing for Faine at Center.

C - Jeff Faine - the OL's signal caller. Technically Faine's very good. He's got good technique both footwork and with his hands. When was the last time Brees got a bad snap? His problem? Size or lack of, Faine's <300 lb. and tends to get manhandled by larger roadgrading NTs. I don't think it was a coincidence that the running game improved when Goodwin subbed for an injured Faine.

RG - Jahri Evans - quietly he's become the Saints best O lineman. He doesn't get alot of notice but I've watched him. He's the complete package. Prototypical Guard size, perfect hand and footwork, great strength as long as he stays low. He continues to improve by refining his technique.

RT - Jon Stinchcomb - he'll never be a overpowering mauler. He gets by on technique. He has great footwork which keeps him from getting beat by most DEs. He's very good at using the DE momentum to take them out of position. His problem? He isn't strong enough to lock up with a big bullrusher. He gets pushed into the backfield.

Current Backups -

Jonathan Goodwin - despite a mediocre preseason I thought he was a slight improvement over Faine when he subbed for him. Goodwin has good size and seemed to get superior run blocking push. The OL didn't miss a beat with Goodwin in the game. I believe he's scheduled to be UFA. I hope he's re signed and given a shot at starting Center.

Zach Streif - He continues to impress me. At 6' 7" 349 lb he is a man mountain. Surprisingly he also has pretty decent and quick footwork. I look for Streif to make a strong challenge for either OT spot. With his tremendous size he has the advantage over Stinchcomb and due to Brown's knees he might have an advantage over him at LT. I hope the competition at both Tackle spots is completely open with no penciled in starters. If he wins the job I'd move Brown back to RT and Stinchcomb to backup.

Andy Alleman - here's what I saw last preseason.....Alleman was completely overmatched by even camp body DTs. He spent most his PT shooting backwards into the backfield.
