Another bad school assignment (17 Viewers)

“It wasn’t to scare them or make them feel like they were going to die, but just to help them understand what’s important in their lives and how they want to move forward with their lives and how they want to pursue things in their journey,”

Yeah... bullshirt. I don't know if this is an offense that merits firing him, but if he really wanted to do what he says, there are many ways to present it, and it can be presented any day during the school year.

They should not be taught all this gender, CRT or any of that "woke" stuff. If a parent wants to address any of that, then fine. But not something our K-12 schools have any business pushing,

What is your specific definition of “woke stuff”?

Bad assignment for sure. With that said, in today's climate, schools should have tight security standards that are strictly adhered too and should have trained armed security personnell. As far as what is taught. They should be learning fundamental educational courses. They should not be taught all this gender, CRT or any of that "woke" stuff. If a parent wants to address any of that, then fine. But not something our K-12 schools have any business pushing,
It’s telling that you feel we need to allocate resources to trained armed security personnel in our nation’s schools.

Do you consider the unpleasant truth of US history to be “woke stuff”?

The real value of of ‘woke stuff’ like PC before it and all other reactionary talking points is that you don’t have to have any idea what you mean to wield it like a cudgel

there's a whole thread on MAP talking about exactly that

More to the point, the actual value is in the nebulous meaning - if they actually defined terms it would be too easy to dismantle any argument they proffered
They no longer have a core philosophy- just targeted hate
Without an intellectual foundation, the best they can hope for is using the tools of conspiracy theory on grammar/language

Educating children about the truth of America’s history is imperative, as is how teachers approach doing so.

One teacher at a Houston middle school proved that after allegedly traumatizing a Black student during an inappropriate lesson about slavery and the Civil War.

According to KPRC 2, Tori Ards, the student’s mother, said her daughter excels in sports and academics.

“She is in advanced courses. She is in the eighth grade but taking ninth-grade courses,” Ards said.

She added she learned of the situation via the school’s assistant principal, who contacted her shortly after it happened.

“She [the assistant principal] explained it to me as it was explained to her and then she put my daughter on the phone to let me know, in her own words, that the teacher had used her as an example of ‘a fugitive slave,'” Ards said.

Ards said her daughter explained that, in attempts to interpret the slave trade during the Civil War, she re-enacted what capturing and selling an enslaved person at an auction would look like. The teacher grabbed her daughter from her seat, brought her to the front of the class, and told her fellow students, “I could snatch her and take her to the South and sell her during slavery!”

Ards said the ordeal left her daughter feeling hurt and embarrassed.

“No student present should have been used as an example to teach any part of this lesson. It was uncalled for, it was unnecessary, it was damaging and hurtful,” she said.

Ards said this isn’t the first time the teacher has been called out for her inappropriate comments and lessons. For example, a few days before the re-enactment, Ards’ daughter called her during lunch and told her the teacher shared disturbing theories about the Confederate flag. The teacher said that while many, including the history books, argue the flag symbolizes slavery and oppression, she believes it has “nothing to do with slavery.”

The teacher allegedly added the controversial flag was a “good flag” created to empower Southern states’ rights.

Though the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District officials have said they’re investigating the teacher, the community is skeptical about how serious they’re taking the matter.............

I've seen similar assignments where you write your own obit, but it was said you are 80 years old, write about your life and what you've accomplished.

It was a way to get them to think about their futures

This is different. To do it when kids are being killed in schools, to do it when doing active shooter drills is just in bad taste

NAPLES, Fla. — The teacher who produced a ‘Confederate History Month’ video and then played it in front of a Collier County middle school will not face any disciplinary action.

The teacher was identified by the district in a 90-page investigation file as Jonathan Papanikolaou, a social studies teacher at Manatee Middle School.

He created and showed the video to students during the morning announcements on April 12.

“It’s a shame that you decided to go about trying to make awareness about what Confederate History Month is,” said Christine Cooper, whose daughter is a student at Manatee Middle School.

“After careful consideration and evaluation of the facts and evidence, the decision has been made that there is no just cause for discipline,” said the district’s Employee Review Committee (ERC) in a decision delivered on April 27.

They reviewed all kinds of evidence, including the video, public comments and weighed whether or not the video fits the district curriculum.

“Good morning, hurricanes. This is Mr. Papanikolaou. If you didn’t know, April is an officially celebrated month here in the State of Florida named Confederate History Month,” said Papanikolaou in the video first obtained by ABC7.

Initially, the video sent shockwaves through the Manatee Middle School community and around the globe. The video went viral, mainly for its pro-Confederacy tone.

“Every year our state celebrates and memorializes that valiant, brave fight and the countless sacrifices by our men and women during that known as the Civil War, but may be more correctly titled the War To Prevent Southern Independence,” Papanikolaou is near narrating in the video.

“Probably picking middle school students to make that kind of broach is probably not the appropriate spot,” Cooper said. “Personally, as a parent, the words stuck in my head that made me go, ‘Wait a minute’ was slavery and property rights. It was the right to own property and that property happened to be human beings.”

“Slaves and property rights, over taxation and a variety of violations of state’s right and sovereignty,” Papanikolaou said in the video.

Cooper’s daughter is in 6th grade at Manatee Middle School but doesn’t have Papanikolaou as a teacher.

She’s one of the parents that urged the district to look into this video. They began investigating and found some parts of the video that have no curriculum backing. After review, school leaders found that there wasn’t enough cause to discipline Papanikolaou...................
