what the heck does the notation exp mean?

So let's say I have an equation:

.5 = exp(-t/8)

and I'm supposed to solve for t... what the heck is exp?

Is it x to the (-t/8) power?

You'd be solving with a variable answer.

I think i found it on google...

exp(x) is another way of saying e^x

very annoying.....

so what i had to do was take the natural log to both sides and then solve for t.

Does this have anything to do with log or natural logs? What subject is it?

(ah, I see you found it)

That's what happened to me... sort of... i'm taking a stats class as a prereq to a systems engineering masters program I'm starting in May.

And I'm a liberal arts major!

Stats isn't as hard as it seems once you've gone through it.
Try advanced theory of statistics.... that was evil. Especially in a 10 week summer school session.
And I'm talking standard degree... not graduate.

It isn't that bad... i'm finding though that I really don't have enough time to practice this stuff so it becomes second nature -- like when do I use the Weibull Failure distribution or the Poisson distribution, etc. I understand it all, but I just need time to get it all straight in my head.

Statistics wasn't bad at all. Its math with a purpose. Anything that mixes alphabets and numbers is the Devil. Its unnatural.

I just ate some peanut butter (a spoonful) and followed it with some Nesquick strawberry miilk. I then belched and it tasted like Captain Crunch with crunch berries....leading me to the equation:

PB + SM = (CC+cb)burp

Take that, Mr. Scientist.
