Another Superstar to MLS? Seattle In 'Advanced' Talks with Thierry Henry (1 Viewer)

Steven Cohen of World Soccer Daily reported today that the new Seattle MLS franchise is in "advanced negotiations" with the French striker and could lure him out of Barcelona in time for Seattle's inaugural season in 2009. Cohen did not reveal his source -- natch -- but did call it a "very good authority" on matters concerning Seattle. For all we know, though, Cohen ran into a very sloshed Drew Carey in a pub in Hollywood last night.

Either way, it's a rumor that has legs. For one, Thierry Henry has talked in the past about how much he loves America and would like to live here when his career winds down -- which appears to be happening already. Also, if anyone has enough money to bring a player like Henry to America, it's Paul Allen, one of the new Seattle franchise's principal owners. Allen could pay Henry's transfer fee with his petty cash drawer, and it would put fans in the seats instantly.

Henry has some serious skills. Where are the owners coming up with the money for some of these guys? It's not like they get great tix sales or anything.

He has fallen off this year though, and Barcelona is loaded with forwards. There's talk of them adding Drogba too.

It's still weird that he might consider MLS, but he apparently loves American culture and sports and would seriously consider the right offer.

Beckham is way overrated because of his social life.
If you don't watch this kind of football but think David Beckham is really good because of what's on TV, he's not.

Henry would put up about 40 goals a season against MLS defenders. He has ripped apart every team he has ever played against in the English, Italian and Spanish domestic leagues, against the best there is for the Frech national side and in the champions league.

He would be much more of a coup than Beckham.

totally agree....Henry's ball skills are far superior on the ball, at full stride than most if not all players today. I think he has languished at Barca sitting on the bench behind Eto and Gio and needs to move on. I think his ability has diminished some, but he would own MLS defenses and would be a much larger catch in terms of skill than Beckham was.

Yes, anyone that knows anything about the sport knows that Beckham isn't a star because of his play (not for years at least) - but he still is a big name and a star in another sense. So it was smart for MLS to bring him in for the drawing power.

Henry could mark a new era in MLS's ability to draw real players. But still the Beckham thing was important, regardless of how much he can contribute on the pitch.

I think most either overrate Becks or vastly underrate him. He's not one of the best in the world now but he is great. There's not many people in the history of the sport that can hit a dead ball like him.

And about affording these guys, ticket sales aren't as low as the media makes it seem. I've been to several FC Dallas games, and when I make it back to watch it on TiVo...it always seems like the cameras pan to the deadest parts of the stadium.

The jersey sales alone for Henry would recoup most of the money.
