Anthony Spencer FA target ???? (1 Viewer)

I think I would have to disagree with you. A well rounded defense is valuable. Day after day after day I hear that this position is more important than that position...that NT is the most important position in a 3-4. But when I bring up that neither SF nor Baltimore have a great NT...mouths close. SF was a great defense well before it acquired Aldon Smith. Also...take away the other Smith brother...and all of a sudden Aldon looks more human. .

People say that. Even coaches say that. I say just look at the money. Elite pass rushers are always the highest paid players on defense. A lockdown boundary corner would be second. The relative value of these players is demonstrated amply in how precious cap dollars are allocated, just as it is on offense (where the quarterback is the highest paid player).

It's all fairly speculative. We don't know how much Spencer will cost. Maybe not as much as I'm assuming. But given our cap situation we're probably only going to have the opportunity to sign one starter level free agent. My personal feeling is it needs to be a deep safety.

Yeah I don't know why people are obsessed with this guy. After years of griping and complaining about Shale we want to go out and sign a low-impact LB as our big free agent? Whatever

We needs sacks. Double digit pressures. That doesn't show up in free agency. You have to draft it.
I wouldn't call Spencer a low impact player, I think he's one of the best Strongside OLBs in the NFL and was the best defender for the Girls this year.

With that said, you are absolutely right. You have to draft your elite pass rusher unless you want to end up like Buffalo and spend $80 million on a guy who you aren't sure what your going to get from him.

I didn't say he was. I'm saying the SOLB in a 3-4 defense isn't that valuable.

It'd be like paying the right tackle Joe Thomas money. We'll find a serviceable SOLB, possibly on the roster (Martez Wilson for instance), for pretty cheap. What's going to hold the defense back is an elite pressure guy. That's the QB on defense, the cog that makes the whole machine run smooth. That's who you spend elite money on, and that's not coming through the door in free agency.
Again, I totally agree. Without an elite pass rusher guy, unless his last name is Sherman or Revis, it doesn't matter what we do on defense. We have to draft that guy and we need to draft him in the first round. That's where the majority of elite pass rushers come from. Good points.

I want to improve as much as anybody but I'm not sure I wanna spend the money Spencer is going to require to get him. We lack cash and need bang for our buck. In Loomis I trust.

LOL

Weird... Ed Werder posted this at 6:42 PM today. I live in the Eastern Time zone, and it's only 5:36 right now. Odd... or is ESPN on a different planet than we are? THAT would explain a LOT! Or perhaps ol' Ed has been set adrift in the Atlantic Ocean somewhere?
