Anyone else here collect silver coins? Or Coin roll hunt? Check out this roll I bought from a local bank here this past Thursday.. I bought 5 total, but this is crown jewel... end to end silver Roosevelt dimes.. worth (on today's market) $2.25 a piece! Netted 140 silver dimes in 5 rolls but never thought I'd hit one compete roll of silver.

How can people be so dumb as to turn these in at face value!?!

Too much effort... Not enough payoff.

effort? I can search a case (50 rolls) in 10 minutes. I usually find 2-3 dimes. Run them through the coin counter machine at the bank, dep into my account.. pick up another box.. about an hour of my time total. I'd hardly call that much effort.

Pretty awesome. I go through and check my change but never thought about buying from a bank. You just go in and ask for dime rolls?

I usually buy a case, the norm is to find maybe 2 or so per box, but sometimes I'll see if they have any "customer rolled" coins.. the teller will pull out the tray, if you see some old looking rollers (these looked like they were from the 60's) then you know that they were prob in a drawer somewhere and somebody died so their relatives just took them to a bank and deposited into their account. Just something I do at the end of the day to wind down, then make a quick stop to swap out in the morning on my way to work or school. I've only been collecting for a month now and I've already found about 16 ounces of silver, at 30+ dollars an ounce, That's not too bad. The real gold mine is if you can find some customer rolled halves, because a silver half is worth about 12 bucks, I had a friend find 3 rolls of ben franklin halves at a bank in Oregon (60 coins at 12 bucks a piece). Silver is projected by some smart people to go up past 100 dollars an ounce in the next 5 years. Hopefully I'll be at 1,000 ounces by then!

I like to get dollar coins on payday. Tellers around here rarely have them in the drawer. They usually say that they would have to go into the vault to get them. When I tell them I'll waint they usually look pretty annoyed.
Some small business owners don't like getting them as payment.

Some of the tellers around my home town are old and grumpy, they want no part of collectors, I try to be as easy as possible. Luckily, I know a few of the girls that work at a couple branches in my area, so they look out for old rolls coming in. I've got a little network going, so I can mostly avoid the mean tellers.

Those business owners had better get used to it, im sure it won't be long before the dollar bill is obsolete, a coin last much, much longer than a bill.

I used to do this at local banks, but they've really gotten more difficult the past several years about dealing with bulk coin (especially if you aren't rolling it!). It is pretty tough to find silver as more people have gotten "wise" to it.

When I was in high school (quite some time ago) I really hit the banks hard for wheat cents. What was crazy is that every once in a while you'd really find customer-rolled rolls that were entirely wheat cents, but usually late dates that carried no premium. It was an easy way to find some difficult and expensive dates, although usually in just G and VG grades.

A lot of the banks these days have those machines kinda like Coinstar, except they don't take a percentage if you're depositing into your account. Also, you can "dump" at any casino even though they are coinless now, they will give you cash for your coins. The trick is to not dump and pick up from the same bank, there's a good chance you'll be buying back your own coins at some point.

I don't know anything about coins, but once I went into a store to buy something and the cashier gave me several pennies. They were shiny, new pennies, but they looked odd to me. So when I got in the car, I looked at them closely, and they were All old wheat pennies, but looked new. I went back in and bought the rest of them. I don't have them anymore, my ex decided they were his and did something with them. The cashier did say that she broke the roll, I think i ended up with about 47 or so.

I just buy Saints jerseys. Sometimes, I get a real one....

:hihi:

I worked at the Jefferson-Orleans South when I was in college back in the 80's... We bar tended AARP christmas parties which were basically a bunch of little old ladies drinking whisky sours... One party, a lady paid us with quarters, when I threw them in the change container they didn't sound like a regular quarter hitting, looked at it, sure enough, sliver quarters. I changed out some dollars for the quarters and wound up collecting about $10 worth.. Still have them today...

My father purchased a bag from the bank here in town.Traded in $180 for $1200 essentially. The teller called him and asked if he was interested in buying the bag.

How do you go about asking the teller for silver coins? i figure its a precious metal so it will go up in value. No harm in collecting silver dimes and quarters like anyone else would a stock or mutual fund.
