Are the Coaches Betting that Trey Hendrickson is Ready to Take a Major Leap Forward this Season? (1 Viewer)

As the WR issue showed last season we have to find some more quality depth. Plus didnt Hendricks also have a shot to win the position when Okafor went down in 2017? He only followed up with a 2018 season of inactivites. Maybe this is his season but I'm betting we are looking hard at vet options.

This. It's pretty obvious that they wanted to sign DEs but winced at the price tags.

I hope Hendrickson takes the next step for sure, but the staff's approach this offseasons doesn't give me confidence that they are ready for him to be active on game day.

I was a big fan of the pick. The little I've seen of him, he's looked pretty good to me. But the high number of times that he was a healthy scratch last year worries me. And you brought up a really good point that the Saints were actively looking for another DE. So maybe it is more of a hope on my part that he will make a major jump forward this year. If he does, that would be huge.

Oh absolutely! I'm rooting for him. I'd rather invest resources somewhere else since so much is tied up on dline already. If he can be better this year, this is as complete a team as ever in a Saints uniform. I'd love the flexibility to pick up a player or 2 once the season started if needed. So I hope he makes the leap.

When he was drafted, I figured he would really develop under Ryan Neilsen. To the previous poster, he does seem to stay hurt a lot. When Davenport got shut down last year, I remember thinking that he was going to blow it up with increased playing time. It wasn't to be. I think he is a quality back-up that does a good job setting the edge. It is ironic because I think setting the edge was his biggest criticism coming out of college. I figure he has been focused on improving in that area, and has. Now if he can focus on improving as a pass rusher, I think he still could be a rotational starter for us.

Early in the 2017 season I caught a little fire for saying that he looked "soft". What I meant to say was that he did not appear to be physically tough enough to be a stout DE.

He made a few plays during 2017 and was also hurt. The fact that we traded up to get Davenport confirms how the team views - a backup.

I wouldn't count on him, but he if steps up, then that will be good for us.

If they are then they don’t need to live around casinos and or make a habit of betting.

JMO.

Henderson is a liability on the field. Offenses run to his side. He is nowhere near the quality of Okafor at setting the edge. He is a stronger pass rusher than run defender, but he is not disruptive. And then there's the issue of being able to stay on the field. If he doesn't make a leap in his play in preseason, I think he could be cut.

It took at least three years for Gallette to start showing starter material. The knocks on him were the same: that he couldn´t set the edge. We´ll see but I wouldn´t count him out.

Hendrickson was not a bad pick we just had veterans ahead of him so this is the year both he and Davenport get reps and contribute to the defense.

Yes I think they currently see him as the 4th defensive end just like last year. They hope to see some improvement, but he wasn’t really needed early last year with a healthy Cam, Davenport, & Okafor.

Mario Edwards is our 3rd defensive end. I don’t know why but it seems everyone just seems to right him off as a defensive tackle. He’s a defensive end that can also play defensive tackle. He’s almost the same size as Cam at 6’3” 280. He’s gonna start off the year as both our backup DE and backup 3 tech unless Onyemata gets suspended. If he’s suspended then Edwards could possibly start a game or 2. In that scenario Brown and Stallworth will see a lot of time together as well. I think if Sheldon Rankins was healthy we may have signed Ziggy Ansah instead of Mario Edwards.

Now if Hendrickson improves enough then yes we will likely see Edwards play more 3 tech with Hendrickson playing the main backup DE spot. Plus we got the undrafted guys like Carl Granderson, Porter Gustin, Corbin Kaufusi, Geneo Grissom, Shy Tuttle, Sylvester Williams, and Kenny Bigelow to possibly make the team on the defensive line. Or maybe we still sign someone out there or a camp cut later on. Hopefully we get a Devaroe Lawrence type of UDFA like we had from last year cause that dude balled out in preseason.

wards.

Whatever happened to this guy? I mean did he do anything in Cleveland? He was a dawg much of 2018 Saints training camp.

He's still on their roster. That Browns defense is good too, so he must have earned his spot there like he really did here but was part of the numbers game and got released.

I believe that Hendrickson needs to prove his worth this preseason. I believe we did an excellent job of signing the UDFA class this draft year.
Hendrickson will have to fight off challenges from Carl Granderson, Porter Gustin (he is listed as OLB), and Corbin Kafusi. The 3 of them I believe can play at a high level in the NFL. They need the opportunity to prove themselves. But I think the 3 can upgrade our lineup.

His ceiling is rather low.

Much more likely to be fighting to stay on this team vs breaking out.
