I'm torn on this, and admittedly, part of it is somewhat emotional and sentimental. The Superdome already is a new stadium in some ways. The design is over 30 years old, but many features and components are state-of-the-art.

I do, however, understand that because the design could be better in a brand-new stadium, there is room to argue that it isn't too soon to discuss the possibility of making plans for a stadium to replace the dome. Perhaps it could have more seating capacity, better sight lines, more profitable suite options, and even features like a retractable roof.

Whether fans agree or not, the fact that the league heavily favors newer stadiums when it awards super bowls is no secret. Dallas is now stepping in to possibly steal the 2011 Superbowl from New Orleans, despite the huge movement to support New Orleans in such an important cause, just because they're offering a new stadium to watering mouths of the NFL.

Then again, it's hard to believe that spending a billion dollars on a new stadium could possibly be profitable for the city or state, since the superdome is not only sufficient for NFL games, but also successfully hosts several high-profile bowls at the college level, as well as many other events, and a new stadium would most likely be tailored to be an NFL stadium, specifically. The trade-off doesn’t seem worth it.

I'm curious what other fans think of this. Would the benefits justify the cost of possibly replacing the Dome? Are there any stipulations that you would impose (if you had your way) in order for you to approve of the idea? For me, I would demand that any new stadium be in Orleans Parish and that it pay respects to the Superdome by being a similar stadium (like Dallas keeping the hole-in-the-roof design). If a new stadium is something that may be on the table within 10 years, then I would have to insist that it not be any kind of attempt to change the franchise identity in any way. It would still be the NEW ORLEANS SAINTS, and you have to consider that before you entertain these talks.

Another part of me says it's ludicrous to even talk about replacing the newly reborn Superdome, especially now. First of all, it's just too soon, and secondly, there's really nothing WRONG with it. There are a lot of emotions there is a lot of pride attached to that place, and its importantance and identity transcends sports complexes if you ask me.

I was attached to the Dome, but it was with a lousy spot-welding job, so I was able to break free.

I agree with you on the fact that the Dome is somewhat emotional and sentimental. Was there when they opened it as a little boy listening to Al play his trumpet and listening to all the older people talk as they walked around and said how wonderful this place is compared to the Astrodome. Then again, it's hard to believe that spending a billion dollars on a new stadium could possibly be profitable for the city or state. Even more where in the world is the state, city, and Saint's going toget that money. Even with the great season this team is having the suites are not all sold nor is there people knocking down the door for naming right's for the dome.

I'm all for renovating the Superdome big time...Chicago didn't build a new stadium but instead did a major renovation on Soldier field, and that seemed to be good enough for the owner and fans. Still, I do see that the competition among owners seems to be for newer, better stadiums. Is this the right reason to build a new stadium? No, but that's the way things are, unfortunately. I would support a new stadium for the sole reason that it would make it REALLY hard, if not impossible, for Benson to sneak out of town with the team. As long as he has "only" the aging Superdome for the Saints, it is always a risk that the team will leave for a city that promises them a glorious new place to play. And face it, with the team playing so well, they are more attractive to other cities....so although I'll miss the Dome and all the great memories there, I say let's get serious about a new stadium in order to ensure that the Saints stay in New Orleans for a long time. I'm more attached to the Saints than the Dome!

I'm not sure how that would 100% keep him in town. I mean could another town payoff what he had invested in the new stadium and other things to lure him away.

I'm just wondering what your thoughts are that you think he would not run.

SAVE THE DOME- I love the dome. It's been through too much with this city and its a symbol of the recovery. Putting the money into renovating the dome would be the right thing to do. Wouldn't it be great to have the dome mentioned along with Soldier Field and Lambeau as the old all-time great stadiums. Also, putting money into a new stadium would be terrible for our rebuilding economy. Money is needed everywhere in the state right now courtesy of Katrina and Rita.

BUT- I'm more loyal to the Saints than the superdome, so if Benson wants to walk if we don't give him a new stadium, we'll just have to give him what he wants.

Blanco: Saints likely won't get new stadium in next five years

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — When the state and the New Orleans Saints renew negotiations about a new, long-term agreement to keep the team in Louisiana, a new stadium won't likely be on the table for at least five years, Gov. Kathleen Blanco said Friday.

Blanco said the state invested significant dollars in substantial upgrades to the Louisiana Superdome — the Saints' home — after Hurricane Katrina. She said she expected that "down the line" the Saints may get a new stadium, but not in the next five years.

In previous negotiations to extend the state's financial deal with the team beyond 2010, Saints owner Tom Benson had pressed for a new stadium — but that was before Katrina hit in August 2005.
