"This is not about the midterm elections. Regardless of which party wins Nov. 7, the time has come, Mr. President, to face the hard bruising truth: Donald Rumsfeld must go."
- Editorial which will appear Monday in the three service-related Times papers

Papers sold to military: ‘Rumsfeld must go’
Editorial comes days after Bush affirms defense secretary’s job security
MSNBC staff and news service reports
Updated: 11:38 p.m. CT Nov 3, 2006

Just days after President Bush publicly affirmed Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld's job security through the end of his term, a family of publications catering to the military will publish an editorial calling for the defense secretary's removal.

The editorial, released to NBC News on Friday ahead of its Monday publication date, stated, "It is one thing for the majority of Americans to think Rumsfeld has failed. But when the nation's current military leaders start to break publicly with their defense secretary, then it is clear that he is losing control of the institution he ostensibly leads."

mutiny anyone? It won't matter as Bush is the "decision maker."

Those papers are carefully set up so that they are not an "official" Department of Defense product, so nothing that appears in them is "official" policy or doctrine.

But, they are read by everybody from generals to privates.

It's all very wierd. Bush goes on record as saying he'll keep Rumsfield through the end of his term, and now there seems to be this counter-voice against him.

Richard Perle was interviewed in the L.A. Times today, and he had some harsh words for the President and Rumsfield--frankly, the timing can't be coincidental, though I have no idea what these "voices" of dissent hope to accomplish.

I wouldn't put much stock in anything published in any Military Times publication.
They do thier very best to influence opinions, not just simply report military related news.

...What about the Marines? Why don't they get this paper?? And can't they see what a $*#@^ Rumsfeld is???

More evidence that Rumsfeld is evil incarnate:

"Today, Donald Rumsfeld is known throughout the world as the zealous U.S. Secretary of Defense who is waging a global "war on terror" in search of "terrorists" and "weapons of mass destruction." Most people, however, are not aware that Rumsfeld himself unleashed a chemical weapon of mass destruction upon the world in 1981-and it,s still out there destroying people all over the world. That "WMD" is aspartame and it has been scientifically and anecdotally linked to millions of chronic illnesses and deaths."

Without commenting on the issue at hand -- it is important to know that the Army Times is probably the media outlet least in step with an official Army position. The relationship between the Army and the Army Times is quite tenuous and has been for a long time.

DD, you are our expert on this type of stuff. Is there any precedent for this at all? Have these papers ever called out their leadership like this before?

As Dads just showed you, the Marines do get a versoin of this paper. However it should be noted that none of the Military Times papers represent the military. These are independent distributions of an independent news paper that is owned by Gannet.

BTW, I totally agree with the article. If this war is to be won (and I am doubtful of that outcome) a change must be made and IMO that change needs to start with Rummy. I know many would like to see the change further up at the top but you'll have to wait two years for that to happen and that is time we don't have.

Oh, yes. The Military Times chain was extremely critical of decisions made about Bosnia and Somolia during the 90s, Panama in the 80s and the Iran Hostage Crisis.

In my military classrooms, in courses dealing with younger soldiers, there was always some confused troop who thought anything in the Army Times was official policy and doctrine.

Advanced level classes knew better and would call down anybody quoting something from that publication.

Oh, if I recall correctly, there was actually a formal request from the Pentagon that the Military Times folks stop referring to Casper Weinberger as "Cap the Knife." That was a reference to his cold-hearted rep for budget cutting.
