As a resident of NY state, I wouldn't mind if "the city" was somehow made part of new jersey or became an entity unto itself. The financial burden it puts on the rest of the state is greater than many realize. Check the cost of living scale, the taxation, the price of pretty much everything here as opposed to the rest of the nation. The majority of the reason for it is that NYC can't support itself.

Having said all that, I will add that New York City is a cultural mecca which is rarely rivaled throughout the world. Art, music, clothing, dining. NYC has it all. We would be at a loss if something happened to NYC. I hope they can preserve that place and the fine people who live there.

Which isn't true at all and represents a fundamental cultural misunderstanding of the rest of the state, but whatever.
